Just an addition to tell you I'm still working on the WOTW game. Ive developed a few ideas and at the mo Ive worked out five possible levels. I'm currently developing the first level and have been doing some research on victorean townscapes.
If anyone has any reference to old pictures on websites etc I would really appreciate any links to them.
Twistedrabbit, thanks for the offer. I think youve got some great design ideas and Im looking forward to seeing your website and game.
If I need help I'll let you know. The game itself is intended to be a freebie since I dont expect it to be massive. Theres only me doing it at the mo.
I did like the call of cathlu site. Thanks for the reference.

Maniac;
An idea for your project or indeed another future project:
Include all of HG Wellses books into the Game.
Earth is invaded by the martians, Player Character trys to get away, perhaps gains help from the invisible man, meets up with cavor, and escapes the earth in his space ship, has a little ditty on the moon, comes back to earth, lands on the Island of Doctor Moreau, Goes back to england to find the Martians have been Defeated, but country rank with oppourtunistic Theives, some levels Trying to get home without being killed by other guys...
Whatever.
Anyway;
Oliver.

I think a cool level/mission or watever would involve you help some soldiers defending a road, ie: fetching some shells, delivering mail to sweethearts, getting water, maybe even get orders from a commander, you know anything to help out. It sounds plausible, doesnt it?

Been some time since a last post on this thread.
In case your interested I've finally begun work on this game. The FMs will not be stilted, stiff affairs. These buggers will chase and kill you, over step houses, catch humans. Took me some time to work it out and make the decision. More soon!!!

I had some problems previously with an old engine I'd created. What I'd now decided to do was develope a game where the player is highly motivated to find food and drink. Ive worked out some ideas and I'm going to release a website at the end of August showing graphics etc. This will not be an FPS, just some poor smuck trying to escape a hideous death!!!

Have you decided to do it contemporary or in victorian times?
Are you only doing fighting machines because in a WotW survival game I would envision the Handling Machines as the larger threat. The Handling machines are much faster then the Fighting Machines as they are designed to track down, chase and capture humans.
I think a good idea would be a horror meter in the game representing the characters sanity. If he/she sees 100's of people burnt to nothing by the heat ray he may start to get a little twitchy and lets not forget about what the effects of seeing someone drained of blood while alive would do to someone.
Basically I liked your idea of keeping the character sane like you mentioned in an earlier post and an insanity meter might be a good way to go. Avoiding detection and not being able to help people might do that to a person after a while. Especially being alone, even the narrator goes temporarily mad "last man alive syndrome."
I think you could also involve scenarios where the player has to make very important choices that can effect the character by the games end. An example being an opportunity presents itself to free rounded up humans that are being held in a pit by the Martians after a large round up. The character could attempt to free them, though highly risky or simply move on.
Of course if he moves on he remembers the look of the peoples faces for the rest of his life.... in an asylum. Things like that.
Anyway its your game, just giving ideas.

Hi Ully,
Ive decided the game is to be set in the victorean era because I want it to remain set in the books specs. The main character is not Herbert but someone new.
One of the main points of the book was being hungry and the morality viewpoint. Not easy. No one was going to die of starvation in the invasion but how the hell do you motivate people to look for food in a comp game?
Ive developed some ideas and the sanity point will be in it.
I have also looked at time in this game as being measured by map progress rather than by actual time. In WOTW the author is motivated to reach his wife. In reality he'd have been fine waiting at the house till it all blows over. He just didn't know it.
Imagine a game done that way. Well I have to motivate the player to keep moving don't I.

That's awesome. My girlfriend recently confronted me about WOTW games and asked me why there wasn't one where you have to try and survive as a person. It's a great concept! The hunger/thirst idea is very appealing too.
Maniacs, if you really want to continue with this idea, I'd be happy to share my ftp space with you and help get a website put together to promote it. Message me if you're interested!

Thanx matey - noted and appreciated. Ive also seen some of your work and I know youve got talent.
The weird thing with a project like this is results come far quicker towards the end. Right now I have to prefab varios objects and architecture and develope program functions that can be reused. Now I'm working on some graphics and I should have some scenes to show soon.
