I wouldn't really expect the original game to be released again as it was. It's too old and a fair bit would need to be done to get it up to scratch. I wouldn't rule out a face lifted and tweaked version though. You need to keep an eye on E Bay and like sites for the original PC version.. they do crop up fairly regularly.

I've not played the PC version so thismay already be there...
For everything, different amounts of damage caused, depending on where it is hit, say a fighting machine is hit on the leg, completely distroying it, it'll fall over, but it could still be alright, another FM could either take it back to base or retrieve the martian inside. Same for humans, if say a tree is hit and it falls on the back of a truck, breaking it, the people in the front will be ok, they could get out and run etc...
I would really like to see a destroyed FM, then a surviving martian crawl our and slowly crawl back to base... Uuuuulllllllll- oh! A little chef! Hmmmm!

[glow=purple,2,300]Even if a tripod was downed by the collapse of one leg, it should still be able to faff about with the heat ray until help arrives, or the martian can disconnect it and walk about with it's unfeasibly large weapon (oo-er missus). The martian could then wander back to base with the strap-on heat-ray like Blaine in Predator. "Payback Time!"[/glow]

I think that there should be martians, not in any machine, wearing a heat ray/black smoke proof suit & carrying the weapon of their choice.
To counter these "sentries", the humans could have mobile cannons or gatling guns manned by artillarymen.

The game was ok but it was released at a time where graphics were still.. well.. not great but now with stratergy games like Command & Conquer Generals, Art of War, Shogan etc, then a re-make of the game by one of these companies would make it really good game.
The bad features were:
Someone mentioned AI, this is true it needs improving a lot.
The game units dont seem to be balanced. three tripods can take on five tanks and the five tanks cant even destroy one tripod, nevermind three.
You cant use any kind of tactics in the game except surround and swarm your enemies with units.
There aint enough time to built the units you need. I find that after 30 minutes when the martains or humans, which ever team you are, attack they seem to have a massive army and you have hardly anything to fight back with.
There could be more animation to the units. Few of you was talkin about if a tripod leg collapsed it should be able to fight until it gets help.
The graphics seem plain and the units seem stiff. Although in saying, i think the look of the terrain was very nice (at that time).
Good features were:
The music is excellent. I found the music was the best part of the game and because of this i extracted the music and put it onto a cd.
The idea was good. its a shame they didnt think about adding a lot more to the game. For example, capturing martains or their tripods and experiment with them. Find out how to kill them properly or how to create their weapons....... actually come to think about it, that is in the game isnt it? lol i dunno. long time since i played the game.
And lastly, the scene at the start of the game where the train is cut up by the martian. that is a really good scene.
But yeah they need to make another, whether it be a stratergy or a first person shooter. But i think stratergy would be a better. And it would be even better if the game was under EA Games.

What about trip wire for the humans? So any machines fall over, if they're tall enough. But it depends on how they see, if for some reason they have computer type instruments inside that detact anything of danger, but I thought they werre just mechanical machines....
Any way, traps could be fun!
For martians, fshoot down trees to trap humans... Exploding buildings to get martians unawares!
Also, for internet multiplayer, customise your own troops! Change colours for your tripods etc! And to download on websites, Mods and Skins and levels etc...
JW could also do some designing programs so advanced people can make their own levels and mods etc (Like Seria have for Aliens Vs. Predator 2)!

The efficiency is poop its like an endless cycle, you use materials to build human farms to get blood the raise efficiency then you need to build element factories to build constructors and tripods, but when you build the element and copper places your efficiency lowers. I would fix it so that this was not as harsh. Plus I have a cheat so it no longer bothers me.
I would improve the AI as my tirpods are daft as fook, it is annoying when they hump each other in battle but bloody funny when they are just stuck near a town.
I would also have little humans running around on the ground so that you can step of the little buggers and burn their hides, he he am mean like that. I would also make information about what the units do, before you research them, I know what they all do now but it was well anoyying to research the drone then build the factory for it only to find out it is a fast suicidal bugger, it was pretty funny me and a friend were getting interested in him due to his speed, then sent him to attack a building and the little bugger rammed it and blew up, bless.
I would also think about adding more complex levels to it, such as having the ability to leave your tripod and chase some smelly humans and eat them, yum yum.

I think there should be "ambush spots" were the units will hide until the enemy gets within eyeshot (not to mention gunshot).

Firstly, I think the game, as a whole, is great.
However...
I think that there should be fewer martian units, but as a replacement, have upgrades to units (example- a fighting machine fitted with heavy artillery, or a flying machine modified to be a gas bomber a la THE ORIGINAL BOOK.)
The interface should be streamlined. As it is now, it is a tad clunky.
Graphics and gameplay wise, the idea of little details is spot on. Esp. the idea of decapitating, and capturing a fighting machine and using it yourself (as in capturing damaged vehicles in Star Trek Armada, and Total Annihilation.) Also, the idea of humans/martians leaving a damaged machine to affect an escape is good. (Imagine, a martian slithering away from a fighting machine. Humans attempt to capture it. However, it has a self-destruct...) Individual People could be a resource...

Efficiency is usually OK as long as you build AT LEAST 3 of each resource building before attempting to build anything else, you also need to keep the area fairly clear of units. Of course this is tricky to do on the front lines so my production facilities nearly always end up being 1 sector behind the front lines.
LOL @ the drone, exactly the same thing happened with me. The difference was that when I first used it, it rammed into a whole bunch of mobile artillery and wiped them out, they're actually quite good for that since the A.I artillery can't hit fast moving targets.

Personally I would love to see an updated version of the RTS PC game. With all bugs fixed plus a multiplayer and improved graphics to match todays PC’s, when I first played this I was blown away with the level of gameplay (probably because I’m a big fan of the Jeff Wayne version). It really brought me back to when I was younger listening to the album. Ok it had it’s problems like dodgy animation on the intro’s, poor unit movement mapping and the dreaded unit disappearance if you sent more than 3 ships to Newcastle. I Still get a tingle down my spine when I hear Nigel Hawthorne “Martians have invaded our territory”. Maybe they could release other maps like an invasion of Ireland or another country, to prolong the game.
