Last few days I've been rediting this film. Ive ruthlessly removed several scenes I felt ruined the film for me. Much of the wandering has gone, the artillary mans battle has been reduced etc Quite alot in fact. The film is still two hours long and Ive yet to do something with the Thunder child sequence.
Heres a breif editing report........
First to go was the awful 'star watching' with the wife in Broad daylight. The sequence leaving the observatory and into the first falling star works very well.
Then I removed everything after Olgilvy runs from the pit up to the writer and paper boy scene. Gone is the scene where Olgilvy is mistaken for a lunatic.
I redited the cylander opening so that we catch sight of tentacles and eyes and then the writer runs to the trees. The heatray rises and the woods set alight. Instead of visuals of people being killed we just get audio effects as the writer flees which was also shortened. I also removed the man who falls in the pit.
The scene with the workman was also removed as it was far to dark at this point. This helped continueity. It may be late but it is summer. We can still expect daylight.
I shortened the journey out of Woking and left out the weird dinner scene. The scene in Leatherhead is simply the wife saying fairwell.
In the storm scenes have been massively reduced. I put in the bit where he crosses the bridge and catches his first glimpse of the FM. Most of the scenes were cut. The crash is very fast. He quickly finds the innkeepers body and then stumbles past the college to get home.
The AM story is shorter as is the journey to Weybridge. And I did cut out the scene with the three scouts.
The destruction of Weybridge remains about the same but I shortened the time it takes for the FM to be hit and then hit the tower and I removed the 'Flying' sequence of the FM into the river. I also removed the people boiling alive since the writer is with them and comes to no harm. Between the writer getting the boat and the meeting the curate is now less than a minute. I also took out the shooting star bit.
Most scenes with the brother have been left in. These scenes show alot of Urban scenes and help counter some of the countryside of which we get a little to much.
Wilst most of the Exodus scenes have been kept I removed the little girl scene.
Most of the scenes with the ruined house has been kept though I've removed most of the feeding visuals. We now here the writer mention the martians are drinking the blood etc and we catch some visuals of the women being prepared. But we only see her react and then we cut to the watchers. It does allow me to take the film a little more serious. Much of the wandering has been removed after this also.
The artillary man has gone. It didn't work for me so now we go straight to dead London. Not much I could do with this but I am considering adding some buildings to the background of Primrose hill. Good few weeks work there though.
As said Ive not done the TC scene yet. It will be much shorter and the porno look scenes are going. I may have to just reedit some music from the intro score etc
There also lots of little bits that have been removed. I liked the little cuts of London being detroyed but I have redited some of it and made it a little longer. Im also going to add the martian hoots. Some scenes in the film would have been awesome with just that little extra touch to them.
Incidentally I've reduced the colour for most of the scenes. The film is heavily saturated but as a result feels 'cooler' which helps to reinforce the English look of it. Only some scenes in the ruined house have kept their full colour.
It is much better and now feels a little more intense than the original uncut. I noticed that with some of the worst CGI removed how much better the other FX seem to hold their own. I would recommend anyone who still wants a period version and has the applications to do it to try this. For me It's been worth it.
