Oooooooooh yes, contentious subject title! Well, first off, if you feel like it you can see my brief review of the Asylum's DVD movie version here. Basically, I really did NOT enjoy the Asylum version, but we''l leave my comments to the review on this thread. But back on topic... The Pendragon version... this is how I see it: Time Hines: Great ideas, obvious passion, terrible editor. Actors: Reasonable... A bit too much of a 1970-80's English 'BBC-type' acting style adopted. Not a bad idea in itself but the actors in my humble opinion have neither the talent or direction to pull this style off with any gravitas. CGI: Ha ha! Yes! The CGI. Well yes, the Thunderchild was woeful, the 'barbie-doll' sequence and the random 2-D houses were laughable but the martians? I thought they were (for the budget) pretty good. Plus, they're the best designed martians (again, in my own humble opinion) since Jeff Wayne. So there. Musical score: Not bad by any means but far too repetitive and over-used. Running time: Please, don't start me on this. One might think that after the critique above you'd think I didn't like the Pendragon version but you know what? I do, in a very weird (and quite possibly sado-masochistic) way. So much so that I am keeping my bought (from Amazon version) and have already cancelled my order for the Asylum version (again, see my review here. cheers dudes, bittersound. P.S. I killed Mr Kellogs, he was a tool.

Not so much contentious, as utterly baffling! ;D Actors: Reasonable... A bit too much of a 1970-80's English 'BBC-type' acting style adopted. Not a bad idea in itself but the actors in my humble opinion have neither the talent or direction to pull this style off with any gravitas. No, they were almost uniformly bloody awful - if an actor on the BBC had put in a performance like these, his Equity card would be publicly torn up in front of him, and he would be ordered by the police to get a job as a plumber, or something. CGI: Ha ha! Yes! The CGI. Well yes, the Thunderchild was woeful, the 'barbie-doll' sequence and the random 2-D houses were laughable but the martians? I thought they were (for the budget) pretty good. Plus, they're the best designed martians (again, in my own humble opinion) since Jeff Wayne. So there. Those Martians were a bag of pus - the Fighting Machines had no unifying sense of intelligent design, they were random agglomerations of old spoons and bits of chickens. Truly crap, it was hard to understand what one was looking at, though the Handling Machines (which did not look like they were designed by the same creatures with the same technology) were vastly better. The Martians themselves were rubbish, resembling turds with string, but they were strangely cute, especially when the first one breakdanced over the top of the cylinder before falling off. Suspiciously light on their tentacles, though. However, in a masochistic way, like you I did kind of enjoy it. In parts. But it was still utter bobbins. On the other hand I can't say much about the Asylum one as I've yet to see it. I am, however, expecting a much more professional fillum.

[glow=purple,2,300]PPs one fan? Nay, make that TWO!!
I hereby declare myself a fan of Pendragons WOTW (and not just because of Susie G)!
bittersound: I agree with your points, but reasonable actors? Ogilvy, Henderson, Stent, The Potman, Gregg The Butcher's son... and don't mention The Junior "how-to-fall-into-a-deep-pit-convincingly" Shopclerk! The Writer & The Curate were OK - and the artilleryman was passable.[/glow]

I have to say I disagree with your views on the Asylum movie (that's for the other thread though), but I am in agreement with many of your sentiments of the Pendragon movie as per my review. Though enjoyed is stretching the definition a little, I found it quite hard to actually dislike the film, despite all of its many faults.
I also liked the tripod designs much more when watching the film than seeing them in the stills handed out by Pendragon. I did laugh out loud on several occasions- though not down to any intended humour.
My biggest fault with both films is how they end- there is no summarisation or reflection on the events of the story as in the book, but just 'Hero meets wife/wife and child', they hug, kiss and the credits roll. That is rather unsatisfactory and left me feeling that both films really were missing something...

[glow=purple,2,300]There was a hint or two of some potential ladylove.
Perhaps it's just me, but in the "meal" scene, the maid kept giving glances at the Wife, and rebuffed the Writers winks & leers, and at the end, she looked p!sssed off with the Writer being reunited with the Wife. "Hands off, she's mine mister!" And the other "Bernard Bresslaw" maid looked jealous of the other maids enamourment of the Wife... [/glow]

Make it 4. I have the film, but don't have the DVD Player to watch it. But studying all those screen shots, all the trailers and such, i find myself liking this even if it is cheese

I am planning on ordering a copy of the Aslyum version myself and it looks quite good. :-) I'll take it for what it is, as I did with Pendragons movie although the quality looks noches higher. Having said that, I am also one of the few who didn't think the Pendragon version was as terrible as I thought it was going to be, although I do have to say those Martians were quite comical in my opinion along with the spinning (or rather wobbly!) mirror. The fact that it wasn't a complete pile of rubbish is actually what makes me angry with Tim since this could so easily have been a very good film but it seems he either bit of more than he could chew or he just isn't focused enough. I would just love to know why some effects were simply not finished, while others were quite passable. The sad thing that gets me, is that it seems it took the tragedy of 9/11 to provide the motivation for these movies and that doesn't sit well with me. After all Spielberg has admitted this and Pendragon obviously realised that they had to get something out now to take advantage of the hype otherwise who knows how many more years it would have remained in limbo. I am sure the Asylum version was also taking advantage of the moment and I bet that Jeff Wayne also needed that little extra nudge as well to get started. The end result us fans are sadly getting short changed, but we have to make do with what we have.

He's even getting me to see his movie today ;D Quatermass all over again. We just need to follow his chant to Stonehenge where we will be vaporised with the Heat Ray!

Sorry, kid.
You're just one of those poor saps who refuse to admit the truth whe it's right in front of your face because you have a ton of biased biews, and preconcieved notions.
The fact is that Asylum has better pacing, acting, music, and special effects. Top that off with the fact that the director has been an open member of the community, and has been involved with the fans, and well... It becomes obvious who has the real film makers passion.
Timothy Hines only strong point is that he follows the book. He lied to everyone blatanly. His special effects are laughable, the whole film has a weird varrying yellow tint, tne sound effects and music are stupid, and the acting is gay. Simply gay.
In technical terms, and theatrical Asylums' War Of The Worlds takes a giant poop on your beloved Timothy Hines.
I make these assumptions from your "review" of asylums version located in the asylum forum.
Take a look.
It doesn't really review Asylums' version. It reviews Pendragons.
