Anyway dragging this topic back on...Erm...Topic here's my mini review of Timbo's Masterpiece. Well i can't fault Mr Hinds ambitions and risking getting my head caved in from the AHB i did kinda like the movie...In a "Maybe Timbo bit off more than he can chew" way, yep the SFX are in a word "Pants" and some of the acting is bordering on the "i can't act but i screwed the producer to get a part in this" level but and it's a big butt... ...A Pianno and his Moustache gave a fairly good performance, the "Cow and "Singing Cow" had a kind of nightmarish "must remember not to eat cheese late at night" feel to it, the "Thunderchild" was...Well...Crap but a right laugh fest esp the "i can gurn better than you" contest between the actors. So all in all...Not bad but must try better next time Timbo. D.F.

I finally got hold of a copy the other week. Considering I'm probably one of the old guard of fans (if you can call it that) who first read about Mr Hines', Timbo's, film back in 2001, I should have got it a little earlier than I did. After all the rumours of pendragons film caused me to want to set up War of the Worlds Online all those years ago.
I got the DVD, I sat down with my girlfriend Susie, she was fully briefed about the history, she knew the ups and downs of the whole 'pendragon' thing from my grumblings over the past few years. By the end of the first few minutes she was trying hard to restrain her giggles
I had a little bit of a rant at her, this is something I've been waiting to see all my life... and You should try and appreciate this... your from Woking etc etc....
I really wanted to like this film. I really really did, I tried my hardest, I tried to ignore the accents, see through the absolutely appalling graphics, and they are rubbish, truly terrible... The thunderchild scene is more like a comedy sketch, it's that bad.
I think that it seems to be increasingly obvious that Hines was a fan, who over hyped his film something stupid. I have nothing against his actors, or the people who worked for him, I'm sure they all did their best, after all it seems more and more likely that the actors where total amateurs, probably his friends.
No matter what anyone says, this film is bad, bad on so many levels, BUT, I thank him for at least trying to make an accurate retelling.
The lesson... never promise fans something amazing; they will be your greatest supporters. When you can't live up to your hype, they'll be your harshest critics

Indeed. I've also been following the Pendragon saga ever since the announcements were made like so many others and to think that after all these years - this is what he comes up with.
I don't think it's all about money and I'm not in the slightest bit convinced Hines is a true fan.
He just told fans what they wanted to hear after Sept 11th and I think this is a cash in done with the minimum of effort and money.

you know I actually enjoy this film much better then the SS piece of bunk.
SS may have had the better special effects, but all 3 hourse of the camp acting in this film I like way better then 5 seconds of Tom Cruse's poo poo...
I actually got some fun out of this one by laughing myself silly, with the SS film I was boared to tears...
I am bound to check out the asylum film, bet that will be a trip

So I've now seen the PP version. What do I think of it? To be honest, I think credit where credit is due. Timbo has come in for a lot of flak over this film for one reason and another, and as Director the crap is dumped on his doorstep. Yes the CGI is questionable, the random use of obvious green screening is off putting, the way the Tripods feet don't make contact with the ground and sort of float around, the kitsch acting without a trace of irony.... I could go on but you've heard it before. From time to time I was reminded of Full Motion Video games from the late 90s like Phantasmagoria or even the kids TV show "Knightmare" (one for the UK members this one), but I still found myself watching on. It does follow the novel very tightly and all the elements are there. A few things that stick in my mind right now are the fight scene with Mrs. Elphinstone and the Artillerymans accent that seemingly slipped in and out of American and British making it sound Australian or South African. The fight scene saw the men simply tugging on the womens arms as one casually sat by as Georges brother layed into his friends. The ruffian (what a word) with long hair took a punch to the face at which point his cap clearly fell off and his hair tossed and flopped about. Cut to the next scene the cap was back on. Not the biggest blooper in this film, but it warranted a loud chuckle from me. I will say I've only watched an hour and a half at the moment, so this review is based on that. I will continue with a second post once I've watched the rest. Overall as a life long WOTW fan I have to say that I am happy with what I'm watching despite it's major visual failings like skeletons writhing in agony after all tissue and muscle has been burned off. I look forward to the ThunderChild scene. Watch this space...

I've now watched the rest...... Good Grief Charlie Brown Heavens to Mergatroid and so on.... Overall BBCs Red Dwarf had better effects. Come to think of it early episodes of Doctor Who far surpassed the effects in this movie. What happened to the mass crowds that descended upon the ferry in the ThunderChild scene? The ferry cast off with about 5 people on board and there was no one at all on the ThunderChild. I know Timbo said he went to painstaking length to get the war ship correct, but he forgot to add one vital detail... The deck crew who operate the guns and such. The Tripods didn't seem impeded by the deep water either, they moved just like they did on land. Georges brother and the Elphinstones watched the battle like it was a game of tennis turning their heads back and forth. What was going on there? Agghhrrr enough of this, let's move on to George in the collapsed house with the Curate. The Curate would never have fit through that hole that he was dragged through which is presumably why we cut away to Georges face so we wouldn't see this impossiblity take place. I'm surprised the dog that came sniffing around wasn't CGI. What the hell was the creature that the Martians brought with them? It was some kind of hog or boar. In the book I read it to be a biped. Odd! And of the meeting with Artilleryman again, where was the Brave New World bit? Not a thing. He meets up with him, has a chat and when the AM offers to show him what he's done and has planned we see George walking away and the AM sat on the roof of a house smoking a cigar.... which is probably CGI. I'm getting annoyed now. I was more than happy to give this film a fair viewing and fight Timbos corner, but now I just don't know what to say for the best. I couldn't believe what I witnessed when all the CGI buildings are blown up throughout the film (if you can call it that). If I'm not mistaken the special effects (if you can call them that) department have used the Shatter effect in the SFX package they have. I tried this effect on a Church spire for my film but dismissed it as rubbish. They would have been better making small models and actually blowing them up whilst filming at around 96 to 100 fps so when it's played at 24fps it looks, not slow, large. I love the way Georges chimney pots are destroyed early in the film and despite there is heavy debris falling towards him and his wife they don't move out of the way. Then when we cut back to them whilst the maid is talking to them, there is so obviously no debris to be seen. Yes, as a fan you must watch this film, but don't expect a great deal and don't change any already arranged plans you might have just to watch it. Chris

Hehe, watched at last.
I actually like the film but for the wrong reasons. I keep expecting Leslie Nelson to pop up. . . .
Nelson - "Quick men, get the wounded into that Omnibus, were taking them to the hospital!".
Passer By "Hospital?, surely they wont all get into that Omnibus"
Nelson "Yes Hospital, its a large building with sick people in it, and stop calling me Shirley"

I noticed, watching the credits, that a lot of people had a number of roles. Some actors where also stage hands, make up, assistant producers to the assistant producers and so on.
In all fairness, in my rantings, I forgot to mention that the musical score is "Phenomenal!"

PP film indeed lacks a lot of things. I think positive feedback might be one.
Their musical score is quite good though. Personally, I don't mind some of their ideas (eg: the way the heat ray looked). However, the way they did it ended up being hopless and laughable.
Their version of the 'Thunderchild' is probably the worst I have ever seen. It looked hardly sea worthy, more like some torpedo boat (I know it is a torpedo ram but I thought that it looked like some WW1 destroyer).
Overall, their acting isn't the best and neither is their CGI work.
