I know this may sound insulting to all WOTW fans (I could care less if Tim Hines is offendfed though) but as more and more reviews come in, it seems clear now that the movie was doomed form the start. So why not give credit to Timothy Hines for becoming the new ED Wood?!
I think it would be great to watch this movie in the same way one would watch PLAN 9: watch for mistakes and laugh our asses off! ;D Maybe even come up with a good drinking game LOL No use crying over it , right?
We're getting a quality movie by the end of the month so I am still happy.
What do you thnk?

I think the entertainment value of the "unintentional humor" in this film wears out *long* before its 3-hour running time does.

Lensman, you may have a point. That's where enhancements come in

Spielbergs film might be a quality alien invasion film [ if you can call Tom Cruise quality ] but it ain't the real WOTWorlds.

Well I may have been too hasty. After all, with DVDs you can skip to different chapters. What we need is a guide to the "good parts" of this travesty. I'll start: 1. The opening of the cylinder; 2. The Heat Ray; 3. The Thunder Child. Of course, if we really are gonna do this then we need actual chapter numbers and times... which means some poor sod will have to actually WATCH THE DVD A SECOND TIME!! And that's a punishment I wouldn't inflict on anyone...

Hi FallingStar, You make a valid point. It is not following the book exactly, but then again, what movie does? I rarely seenj a movie that followed the book exactly so this is really nothing new. I know I want a War of the Worlds movie that reflects the book too, but if I looked at it that way, the original PAL movie should not have been called WOTW since the ships could fly and tons of material was missing from the novel.
We all could agree/disagree and rehash the same point so it comes down to personal choice. I hope you like Speilberg's when it arrives... that's what we all want, right? I have a feeling it's going to be much better then I thought. Hope it works for you too.

Hey Lensman. Good idea ... how about an edited copy though or a fan cut? That may be better too! I just may reauthor it and try to make a better edited version of it when I get my DVD. But I would not want to upstage Tim though (Yes I would)

Hey twiddle/Lens, not having seen this (almost definately won't), i get the impression that if you did a 'fan' cut of this you'd end up with the title and the credits or if you're a raelly brutal editor just cut the disc in half!!
Is it really worth the effort

LOL! But if you'll look at the "What We Liked about This Film" thread, you'll see that a fan edit need not be *quite* that short.

Sorry, I wasn't very commited there, can't believe that i used the word "almost" in my last post. I will not buckle, i will not see this.
You never know Hines may release a directors cut, you know the type "as the director intended" running at 2hrs 59mins shorter, now surley that would be a world first!!

Actually it's "Bambi Meets Godzilla". I found a website which purports to have the entire film as a download, but it's not-- it's just a short clip which entirely misses the point of the film... the point being ridiculously long credits for a ridiculously short film.
Looks like you can buy a VHS at Amazon.com, under the title:
Bambi Meets Godzilla & Other Weird Cartoons (1987)

Both and my wife cracked up when the first Martian came out of the cylinder. Marvin the Martian is a lot scarier then the Hines version was. The world's most fake trainwreck is another great bit. But the Thunder Child take the cake.

A drinking game, now there's an idea. However you would have to be careful when setting the rules of when to drink. It sounds like if you had a drink everytime some dodgy CGI came on the screen you would be plastered in no time
