[glow=red,2,300]I thought that the remake won out in tension and suspense irrespective of spfx. [/glow]

I love Rob Bottin's statement that in regard to special effects "you still can't beat latex and KY jelly" Applies outside of special effects too

Bayne, no I didn't mean to imply that the special FX were what gave it the suspense and tension, but they certainly added to it. The argument was actually made by critics that it was the original that had more suspense and tension. This was implying the new version was solely about the FX which I always disagreed with.
My opinion is that while a Science Fiction movie can still be relatively good without much in the way of effects, it can become a great one if it has good fx and they are done right.

[glow=Purple,2,300] Interestingly, you could compare Howard Hawks Thing and John Carpenters Thing (Fnarr Fnarr!!) to George Pals WOTW and Pendragons WOTW.
Where HHs version is good, JC went back to the original story (John Campbell's "Who Goes There?"), and made an authentic adaptation - and to my mind much better captured the darkness, suspense and tension.
How can anyone think the original is more tense and suspenseful with dialogue like "An intellectual carrot! The mind boggles!"...
Now, if we had John Carpenters WOTW... Cor, imagine what a suspenseful soundtrack he'd build up! [/glow]
Just discovered how to do that glow text - cool city!!

I would love to see a film with a man in a carrot suit!!! (any reccomendations???).
Personally, I think that the old Toho production of.. "Ebira, Horror of the Deep", has some outstanding special effects. Decades ahead of its timne, and it also boasts one of THE great movie soundtracks EVER!!!
"Shout".
