Freemasonry definitely has occult links – even if these days it is only found in some of its symbolism. Depends on when and where. 18th-century freemasonry disseminated Newtonian science from England to the Netherlands and later to France, where it found proponents in people like Voltaire and Maupertuis. It was also a place where people learned many 'democratic' rituals and values. Historian of science Margaret Jacob calls the mason societies little 'laboratories of democracy' - labortories where people learned experiment with science, and then learned to experiment with government (i.e., democratic behaviour). But it was part and parcel of a whole level of elite 'sociability', ranging from religious bodies, associations, literary societies, café culture, academies, salons, and the like.

Actually Freemasonry was originally formed to help people...yes some people use it for their own gain, but this happens in all organisations!
