I've been assuming the martians had a remote control of some kind that let them guide the machines into picking them up, possibly operating the figting machine from the handling machines.

The Martians were the brain for this, the body.
Their forms were otherwise pratcically useless, even on Mars I think

Great work! How long (roughly) did it take you to model that? I just started whipping up a FM in 3DS Max but I think mine's going to look vastly inferior now ;D Ah well, at least it keeps me off the streets.

Its got a design which still looks good but alien in design. Its like moving towards an organic look without destroying the impression it is still a machine. A similar sort of thing was said by H.R. Gieger about designing the alien, the face hugger and chest buster in Alien. According to him, the reason why things that look mechanic but are living (xenomorphs i think) are scary is 'cause it plays on the fear of dependancy on technology. I'm sure that ROger dean said something similar about the design for the martains machines. It's the reason they have arms that don't look like tenticles. ANd its also the reason why they look like they have leg, waist to body, and neck to head combonation because even though it looks alien, the structure is similar to basic arrangment of a human. Now ive confused myself.
