Oh! It's something that if you use it in the correct way you can make a creepy SFX! So it's a musical instrument! Thanks for clearing that one up! ;D It's known as 'sampling'. The FX sound of the cylinder was created by recording externely the movement of a saupan inside a ceramic toilet bowl (thank god they flushed it first, don't want a floater). The recording was then given reverb, depth and the volume put right up - hey presto eerie sound.

YeahH_C- I reckon they must have used a gated 'verb on the sound- makes it sound big and echoey while the sound is going on, but the gate silences the reverb once the saucepan stops spinning.
Krys- if you get your folks to order it via Play for you, you'll save £10 on HMV's price for starters... I still haven't got the box set, but my friend who knows Jeff Wayne's researcher has managed to bag me the reissue CD. Nice!

No I have never seen a saucepan! What is one? It's a silver metalic object that is currently heading towards your head Krys, it's horrible being 15, isn't it?

I thought we were talking about Talkboxes.. the device used to make the Ulla Sound! And with a bit of electronics know how you can make your own on that site. May give it a go, I have a talkbox effect on my multi effects unit but it doesn`t let you connect a tube or a mic to it. Will let you all know how i get on.

The "ULLA" voice effect was done with a talkbox, very effective though at the time of the album being done, you could have got a vocoder. I do wonder if they did try one but never liked it!. The talkbox was rigged up to the electric guitar and play out by Jo Partridge.
I believe that Jo is from Norfolk, so the original "ULLA" sounds sounded more like "OOOORRRR" ;D . . . .
. . . . . just kidding.

As far as I remember from the Collectors DVD, Jeff said that Prof had a go at try at making a sound to say Ulla but at the time he couldn`t get a synth to pronounce the "L" so it sounded more like "OOOOOWAAAARRRR".. so Jo Partridge got the job.
