You see the impression I get is that Spielberg decided to honour the original story fully yet in a modern setting. I think he feel that too many people have just taken small bits of the War of the Worlds story e.g ID4 and it was time to for someone to go back to the original novel and do the full thing justice albeit in a modern setting.

If Wells had written the book today you may have found his story not too dissimilar to Spielbergs story. Remember that in 1897 London was the metropolis of Wells's world but today its a stinking hell hole, one giant traffic jam waiting to turn into permanent gridlock. The 19th century romance has gone, as has most of the countryside. So Wells may have chosen another globe trotting empire to target with his story of world domination, America! So I say moving War through time and space is fine and judging by what we have seen so far old Herbert wouldnt be too miffed.
I feel an under current of anti American/anti hollywood sentiment and feeling in some of the posts. Dont let unfounded hatred of all that is American stand in the way of your enjoyment of a kick ass movie. Spielberg is not Roland Emmerick.
Judge it on quality and most importantly judge it by how close to the tone of the book it manages to get.

Its not the anti American feeling, motile. WOTW is unique for a reason. It was written a hundred years ago and has a unique feel to it. Its about being deprived of a good adaption of an Xcellant novel.

Yes yes I understand all that and I agree with you but I still dont see anything wrong with a modern adaptation, after all it could have been made by some idiot yes man director bowing to the suits like in the orange adverts- "So Tom could save the day with a picture message!" -Lets face it SS movie is going to be ace, yeah ok it may be a cliche ridden vehicle for Cruise but who cares? Its a kick ass movie based on my favourite book, that will do me! Maybe in the future somebody will make the faithful version, when the dust has settled after Pendragon....

anyone who posts on a forum - especially the imdb barfly forums - are already a 'certain type of person'. they are not the average Joe. The average Joe still likes ID4. Movie fans with any critical detachment recognise it as a piece of crap. I make review posts on IMDb but i havn't watched ID4 in years. ;D ;D
