Do you have a favourite painting from the artwork booklet that came with Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds and if you do which one and why does this one interest you.
I really like all of them, but my personal favourite has to Thunder Child. Its a iconic 70 album image and one that shows great detail of the Fighting Machine. Also it shows these two great machines, FM & TC pitted against one another in the books memorable battle of Humans against Martians.

I too like the painting of the fighting machine and the Thunderchild. The intensity of the artwork is what gets to me....look at the spray of the surf crashing against the leg of the fighting machine, the downed foremast and rigging of the Thunderchild and the incredible energy of the heat ray being absorbed and radiating out past the edges of the ship's fo'c'sle plating, the steamer escaping toward the rays of a benelovent sun-warmed horizon, London in flames in the background. I have a friend who has the 5-foot square record shop promotional poster professionally mounted and on display in his home. For me, this is the best artwork from the LP. Too bad CD's come with such teeny booklets.....no room for great artwork anymore!

I I have a friend who has the 5-foot square record shop promotional poster professionally mounted and on display in his home. Sounds very similar to what I have. I have a couple of advertisment posters for the album. One which sounds the same as your friends showing the TC & FM, a huge colourful card one of the albums logo design (1995 re-launch), trade poster from 78 showing the 'Panic In The Streets' image under the logo 'THE LAST WORLD WAR' and another 95 re-launch of the TC & FM. I have not seen the insert for a few years now, but Dead London always got to me (im sure it has the crows pecking at the martians). All the artwork was stunning if i recall. Thunderchild comes a very close second

Just found out that Michael Trim who did the albums 'Thunder Child' artwork was one of the concept artists on the THUNDERBIRDS (2004) movie.

I dont really see them as "favourite" pictures I cannot really answer that question!!! Maybe we should do a poll: "What is your scariest picture!!!!" ;D My vote, probably "Dead London" as that has had the most haunting effect on me, horrible-beady-eyed-crow-in-pecking-flesh scariness!!! This would quite swiftly be followed by "Panic In The Streets" (woman's face...). Then the iconic Thunderchild would get third place (because that was the most frequently shown picture!) Deep breaths... That's better! ;D

'Dead London' for me... the sight of that crow picking at the red flesh and the blood dripping from the windows of the fighting machine just sums up the whole creepy feeling of the album. 'The Red Weed' comes a close second - no martians in sight but there's a wonderfully 'alien' atmosphere to it. The slimy weed and the overcast sky really create a sense of terror, and the shattered windows speak of recent horror. You can almost hear the distant 'Ullas' blowing on the breeze.

Deafinitely Thunder Child, though Horsell Common is probably a close second.
All of the paintings are good and evocative in their own right- Parson Nathaniel, while being a lift from Dali, is very haunting- it's down to the glow in the 'eyes' of the tripods and the way they seem to be searching for you.
Brave New World is also a very powerful image- especially in tandem with the song. It's steeped in Victoriana. Has anyone seen the film 'One Boy and his Dog'? An 80's sci-fi flick starring Don Johnson with a similar Victorian feel. A very good film, as it goes...

[glow=purple,2,300]My Faves are Thunderchild and Horsell Common, but if I want cheering up, I just look at Panic In The Streets. The sight of the Fat Bloke huffing & puffing always makes me smile for some strange reason. Bet he wished he hadn't spent so much time in Mrs Miggins Pie Shoppe!! Still, I can't talk...If a FM was coming down the street, I guess the lure of Bakers Oven cornish pasties would seem a rather regrettable lapse in my fitness regime!!
Oh, another pic I like isn't inthe booklet, but in the Poster mag - of the HM in the field. I hope this is in the new booklet, coz I ain't got the poster mag (to expensive on eBay!)!![/glow]

[glow=purple,2,300]I just looked at the booklet again, and I'd forgotton about the semi-nudie bloke! On the left there's a bloke pressed against the wall with no trousers on - the trollop!! There's also a woman with part her top ripped off, and her corset is on display (so that's where Hines nicked the idea from!) But...why's the bloke got no trousers on in the middle of the day? Obviously he had time to put on a shirt, so why not slip into some slacks? Make you wonder if he bothered to put his undercrackers on! Mind you, looks like the martians caught him well and truly with his pants down!![/glow]

[glow=purple,2,300]Seeing as "Martians Country Picnic" wasn't in the original booklet, were there any other similar Trimesque images not included? Either not bothered with or used in other promotional material?[/glow]

My fave one is the dead london one, i just like the way it shows all the destruction and the downfall of the machines.. dont really know what else to say, how to explain
But then I was going to vote for the Parson Nathanial, because that was the one when I was younger that scared me the most, its just the way the the machines are standing above the man, with the heat ray ready
