Ahhhhhhhhh, the beauty of a synthesizer. It was Ken Freeman who was behind that sound. I have always liked that creepy 'dog' howling sound that Jo Partridge creates on the electric guitar during 'Horsell Common And The Heat Ray' - (I woke to the alien sounds of hammering from the pit and hurried to the railway station to buy the paper).
The whole album has some superb atmospheric arrangements. The sounds of the Fighting Machines walking represented by the audible 'clicking' during ' The Artilleryman And The Fighting Machine, the arrival of the Machines represented by the deep sustained 'rush' of strings, best heard just before the opening narration of 'Thunder Child' - just a few of my favourites.

oh yes, the analogue synthesizer, accept no substitute. I'm going to have to go and listen to those bits that you mentioned H_C, I've not noticed those 'clicking' sounds before (probably because I'm usually too busy looking for a sofa to hide behind).
The whistling sound is, by the way, excellent for drive by heat-raying. When I was a student at Portsmouth (about 10 years ago now), my housemate and I would criuse down by the seafront in his car randomly buzzing people with loud excepts from WOTW (Horsell common and the heat-ray is a good track for this). Silly I know, but it would beat doing essays.

Stewy - The 'clicking' sounds come right at the start of TAM&TFM, just before Burton says 'Quickly, one after the other, four of the Fighting Machines appear'.

Cheers H_C, I'll look out for that. I should imagine that details like that will be awesome in the 5.1 mix.
