'Quickly one after the other four of the Fighting Machines apeared, monsterous Tripods higher than the the tallest stepel striding over the pinetrees and smashing them. Walking engines of glittering metal, each carried a huge funnel and I realised that I've seen that awfull thing before! (...) A fifth machine apeared on the far bank, it rase itself to full height flurriged the funnel high into the air and the ghostly terrible Heat-Ray struck the town. (...) As it struck all five Fighting Machines exculted admitting defening houls wich roared like Thunder!'
That's my favorite part, it catches the fear perfectly and together with the little piece from 'The Eve of the War' it's just fantastic.

[glow=red,2,300]If the future of the musical follows on like the book, the Martians might have an occupying colony on Venus.
They could launch a second Invasion like the Dalek Invasion Of Earth and launch diseases of their own devising or poisons into Earths atmosphere... if they were totally ruthless they might try and wipe out all biological life on earth! Another option is the more defensive one where they might arrive in completely sealed systems... living inside their airtight machines relying on technology to create the blood they need...
Kryss, where'd you get that pic? Not seen that one before either! [/glow]

How about Martians vs Daleks.
Two races dependant on machines getting into a scrap over the ownership of the third rock from the sun.

One thing that is never explained in the book or the musical is why the martians invade.
This is actually broached quite well in ID4, in the way the invaders are seeking to pillage the resources of our panet then move on to the next, much like locusts...
...Would be interesting to know wjat was going through Wells' mind when he first had the idea for WOTW and the background behind the story...

'They regarded this Earth with envious eyes...' On the 'Ulladubulla' CD track 'Ulladubulla' there is a monologue by a Martian explaining that the resources on Mars are exhausted despite all their efforts and the only option open to them is the colonisation of Earth. In the first chapter of the novel Wells says that, in a nutshell, Mars is dying. It's oceans are shrinking, it is subject to constant freezing temperatures and the Martians turn their attention on our warmer, younger planet.

By right clicking on Krys' pic and selecting properties you can see that it came from webgeyser.com which appears to be a site made by some graphic designers for websites. The pic in question was by a guy called Igor Medeiros, although it doesn't say what it was for (if anything). He seems to be active in illustrating fantasy subjects, comic books, merchandising (he appears to have done the box art for the Harry Potter Quidditch Board Game) and so on.. Here's his online portfolio (some nice stuff on there).. home.earthlink.net/~ourcasa/index.htmlI have also e-mailed said gentleman as to what the pic is for and will let you know if he replies.

Wow! That was quick. I got a reply already! He wrote... 'Yes indeed, I produced that illustration for one of my classes in college. The description of the Martian was taken directly from the book.. I have always been a fan of H Wells, and our assignment was to choose an excerpt from a SciFi book. I hope that answers your question. Sincerely, Igor Medeiros'. What a nice chap!

Good work. It's so nice when artistic people are so approachable. Sadly, musicians are not as affable all of the time (Especially on the London Gig circuit!). "It all seemed so safe and tranquil'. The intonation in Mr Burton's voice here really ups the sense of impending doom. I've also just got to that bit re-reading the book.. (Thank the maker I've finished 1984.....on to something more cheerful now! )

Speaking of lines from the musical does anyone recall that line from one of the 'UllaDubUlla' mixes (apologies, can't remember which one) in which the narrator asks "Is this your house?" and the Artilleryman replies "It is now!"? This line was not in the standard album version. Could this imply that the unreleased original album recording had a longer rough cut and the released version does not contain all the recorded dialogue? Maybe there is a longer version sitting in JWs dusty vault; it might explain the curious non-explanation of the 'Black Smoke'. Interesting to see what will emerge from JW next year.....(hopefully not Black Smoke, that is )

I can't wait... No - I actually CAN'T WAIT!
HC - can't you use your special influence to alter time, speed up the harvest or get Jeff Wayne and his merry band of sound engineers to up the schedule a bit? It can't take that long to re-remaster and re-edit the recordings etc....

Phil,I was puzzling over that the other day when I listened to the Album again last week but I forgot about it. Well spotted!.. In the Ulladubulla' track of 'Brave New World- Todd Terry remix' the conversation goes.. Narrator: 'Is this your house?' Artillery Man: 'It is now!' Narrator: 'Why? What's been happening?' None of this is in the CD of the original album.Seems there must be additional material around.

Hopefully Nerfy it'll appear on the 6 disc reissue that's promised... I like the line "from the station came the sound of shunting trains ringing and rumbling...softened almost into melody by the distance".. AND "It seems strange to me now, but everyone spent that day like it was just like any other..." ...gives me a sense of creeping foreboding of the approaching terror ;D

It can't take that long to re-remaster and re-edit the recordings etc.... I take it this one's for me. Sorry, no can do Im afraid. Dont forget this would be a 50/50 project with Jeff and Sony. The album which has already been remastored is not going through another remastering stage, its being turned into 5.1 Digital Surround Sound, something that has never been done, until now of course. Such albums like "Dubulla" were created by various artists with permission from Jeff who owns the original recordings, reason why that particular album has some additional diologue. The newer version for next year will also be released as a deluxe boxset. And with the new films coming out, wouldn't you want to wait until the times right. "The best comes to he who waits"

I think those additional words may have been put together by simply re-editing the existing dialogue.

Actually, I've just had another listen to the Todd Terry remix track as I haven't heard it for a while... So,the actual conversation goes as follows... Dialogue in *CAPITALS* is NOT on the original CD. Artillery Man: Halt! Who goes there! Journalist: Er..er.. Friend! Artillery Man: Be on your way! This is my territory! Journalist: Your territory? What do you mean? *WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING?* Artillery Man: Wait a minute, it's you! The man from Maybury Hill! Journalist: Good Heavens! The Artillery Man! I thought you surely burned! Artillery Man: I thought you surely drowned! Journalist: *IS THIS YOUR HOUSE?* Artillery Man: *IT IS NOW!* Journalist: Mmm... Have you seen any Martians?.. And so on.. Not a great deal of difference but the extra lines sound like they belong in the conversation. I don't know how remixers ply their trade but I assume they were allowed access to Jeff Wayne's archives. Perhaps the source tapes or whatever had the extra lines in but they had been cut when the original album was pressed, as Horsell Common suggested. It doesn't really make sense to me to make up such seemingly insignificant lines up out of existing dialogue. I mean, I'd understand it if they'd gone to all that trouble to get Richard Burton saying ''Yo Overlord bitch, I is in da house' or something for a remix
