Just curious- if you had to decide on ONE out of all versions of The War of the Worlds, from the book to any of the films, and the Jeff Wayne musical, which version would you own?
I know most, including myself, would probably pick the book. But you never know, some may pick old Jeff, or even Pendragon (Ha! *cough*!).

Ultimately it would have to be the book. But I spend a lot of time in JW world so it would be really tough to leave that behind.

I would have to decide on the JW musical.
It was the first wotw related thing I owned and in my eyes the best.
The book is ok, but I guess because the JW version was in my life since I was about 5, it kinda got to me more.

Wow- that's two so far that have picked the album over the book. It's funny, but I too grew up with the album. My parents had it on vinyl with the pull-out picture book and everything. And guess what- I have still got it! Only problem is, I can't play it as I haven't got a record player ;D I have only read the book recently, and I definately would rather own the book over anything else (although I almost chose the Spielberg film as I love the film media). I do love the album, but to be honest, the second half kind of runs out of steam- my opinion anyway.

I do love the album, but to be honest, the second half kind of runs out of steam- my opinion anyway. I see what you mean. It totally peaks at the Thunder Child bit, but then troughs at the Red Weed bit - but I think it does bounce back after that

I like both the album and the book but the book is a masterpiece and the album is great and inspired in parts - not so great in other 'small' parts. There's no doubt that Jeffs album introduced TWOTW to a lot of people [ including me ] though and Jeff has added a great deal to the WOTW universe. It still has to be the book for me though.

The book, everytime, I heard the JW version first, then saw the 50's movie then read the book and it beat them all, but JW is a very close second.
A better question would be in order how would you rank them all.
Mine is 1. The book 2. JW's 3. 50's movie 4. SS movie 5. Pendragon 6. Asylum
anyone else?

1. Book 2. JW 3. SS (This saves itself from being lower down mainly because of those tripods, some chilling scenes... and because Pendy's has to be bottom, doesn't it? ) 4. Asylum 5. Pal 6. Pendy

For me it's the book, followed by the '53 movie, itself followed by the the '39 radio broadcast. I'm probably the only person here who hasn't actually heard JW's verson. Gotta fix that someday.

Ok, I have already said I would choose the book if I had to have one, but this is my order, bearing in mind I haven't seen the Pendragon version yet till it arrives:
1)Book 2)Spielberg 3)Online Comic (don't forget this one people!!) 4)Asylum 5)JW 6)Pal
I will have to put Pendragon in somewhere once I have seen it. Can it be any sillier than when the martian puts his suckers on the womans shoulder in the Pal version?!

It would be a tough decision choosing between the book and the musical. The musical does mean a lot to me... as it is what got me obsessed wih WotW in the first place.. but in the end I know I'd choose the book, with JW's version a very close second.

hmm in order mine would have to be: +Jeff Waynes +SS - I KNOW many people will probably hate me for that but so what +Pal +Book - its low down, I know, but I just cant get into it as much as the others, and I've only read it 4 times. + Pendragon, last. I didnt even want to include it, but its there. Havent seen the asylum version yet, I really want to aswell.

Okay- got the Pendragon/Hines version in the post today, and just watched it all the way through- no stops (phew!!)- Okay it looks like something from my old Amiga computer days, but I actually enjoyed watching it!! Anyway, here's my updated list-
1)Book 2)Spielberg 3)Online Comic 4)Asylum 5)Wayne 6)Hines 7)Pal
I put Pal after Hines simply because they both are ridiculous in places, but Hines follows the book more.
