As much as man LOVES to think he's so special, I think it'll be very worng and presumptious of us to assume we're the ONLY life in the universe.
Look in the sky on a clear night. There's millions upon millions of stars out there, and thats just OUR galaxy. Not to mention the countless other galaxies out there. Take the fact that each star is a sun, and our own sun is a bog standard, run of the mill, of the shelf model, which in turn has at least one habited planet. There has GOT TO BE more suns with habited worlds.
It maybe just a matter of time before we're contacted.

I have to say that, with the number of stars with planets out there, somewhere else must have develped life at some level. A scientist/mathmatician called Frank Drake invented a little mathmatical equation to try and work out how many advanced civilizations could exist in our galaxy... it may be only a theory, but is certainly fun. An online version can be found here: www.seti.org/site/pp.asp?c=ktJ2J9MMIsE&b=179074

Extraterrestrial life? Oh, sure. Probably anywhere sizable bodies of liquid water exist for a long time, we'll find life. But probably on most worlds it will be just microbes. For most of its existance on earth, life was just viruses and one-celled organisms. It appears the "jump" to multi-cellular life occurred only once during the billions of years of life on Earth, indicating it's an extremely unlikely event.
So I think we will find life on Mars and Europa and possibly other places right here in our own Solar System. But finding someone else to talk to... that may very well be so rare that it may never happen.

Sure, Earth can't be the only planet with life on it. And since bacteria is a form of life I'm convinced. Intelligent life, now that's something else.

what about life on mars? there is evidence. first the 1996 fossil. ok not hard evidence but still not disproved. but there is an out of balance methane concentration in the martian atmosphere which has not been completely figured out yet. the most likely explanation is underground life.
personally i believe there is life on mars right now

really really, what can I say, I dont know really not. The universe is probably infinite. In all that space, probably there should be life somewhere? . But true or not I will always like to see movies, or series, about ET coming to earth. chantale.

Whether or not there is other life in the universe, either outcome would be incredible.

Yep I believe that we're not alone. I think that there are aliens out there. Currently I'm talking bacteria and small things like that. Though there might be more advanced civiliastions out there - you just never know.

Gonna have to say i don't. I have no problem with anyone believing otherwise. I just think Humans were created special.

With the universe the size it is i cant imagine we are alone out there. Either that or the solar system is stuck in a giant fish bowl and our sattelites are just going to go 'clonk' when they get beyond the kuiper belt...

With billions and billions of stars just in our galaxy, and with billions and billions of galaxies in the cosmos, it seems quite arrogant to assume we're the only intelligent species around. Or as Carl Sagan put it in his novel Contact, "If we are alone in the Universe, it sure seems like an awful waste of space."

Yeah, I believe in life out there... Space is so infinitely huge we can't even begin to imagine what might be out there.. heck, we don't even know what is in our deepest sea or thickest jungle and we presume to know what is out there And just because there might be life out there doesn't mean they are little green men in silver suits running about thinking ''hey, we must contact Earth'' It bugs me that people think that Aliens even know about us, let alone want to visit and it bugs me also that they presume that 'all'' alien life must be vastly superior and more intelligent and advanced... why? It might be a sea full of bacteria on Europa.. a common belief amongst scientists.. but just because I don't see many bacteria in flying saucers whizzing about, doesn't mean it isn't a valid alien lifeform. Phew! Rant over he he ;D Not quite sure why it turned into a rant he he ;D

Thy'd probably look at us in the same way that we would think twice about venturing into Hackney/Croydon on a Friday night- something best avoided if possible!

There was a TV show years ago that suggested that alien spiecs are unlikely to be even remotely humanoid. We may meet a race as bright as up but they all look like crabs or lobsters or something.

Definitely there is intelligent life out there, but I seriously doubt whether any of it has ever been able to visit us. The distance is just too vast. And Rusti, are you talking Zoidberg's race? Because if first contact was with a race of comedy Jewish-Woody Allen style lobsters, then I'd probably begin to believe that there was a god.
