Not sure if there's a thread like this already...but I've noticed a couple of homages to Wells and WOTW in general on the Television over the years. Post yours if you've seen any...
Recently, an episode of "The Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy" titled Billy and Mandy vs The Martians had a few scenes where a yellow mechanical tripod was seen. One sitting idle on Mars, and the other firing heatrays in the streets on Earth. Of course the Martians in the episode were actually zombie-like aliens brought back to life by the Martian Grim Reaper, but the homage made me smile.
An episode of Futurama...I can't remember the name...there was a three legged tripod machine in the Professor's attic. Also there was a joke about time travel and of course they showed the famous George Pal machine of the 60's.

I saw an episode of 'Fairly Odd Parents' ones, there was a tripod in there that fitted Wells' discription perfectly..., and it was pink! Tripod

My favorite scene from one of my favorite episodes of the fairly odd parents: Timmy: Martians, you brought martians to kill the roaches? Cosmo: well you said nothing on Earth can kill roaches, so i brought something not from earth! Timmy: Martians destroy EVERYTHING, EXCEPT cockroaches, dont you watch the movies!
I see WOTW references in cartoons sometimes, the occasional Manta from the 1953 film, the occasional reference to the 1939 broadcast. The best WOTW reference I have seen is from a cartoon called Hey arnold, where in the halloweeen they did a big parody of the Orson Welles broadcast.
Live action wise its rare I see a reference to WOTW, sure there was the obligatory reference to the Orson Welles broadcast every so often here and there, a few mentions and references to the Pal film, but nothing much else. but gotta love in star trek 5 with the klingon ship parascope giving out the hum of the heat ray from 1953...

There are literally references to War of the Worlds everywhere. The ones I can remember off of the top of my head are:
There is a 'Pinky and the Brain' cartoon episode where they do a parody of the Orson Welles broadcast. In the movie 'Signs', a character says "It's just like the War of the Worlds!" Similarly, in the Disney animation 'Chicken Little', one of the characters has the line "It's like the War of the Worlds out there!"

I'm amazed there hasn't been a spoof in the Simpsons yet, in one of their Halloween specials. Maybe there's one on the way.

A small time production company called PENDRAGON PICTURES did a homage last year, but they didn't pull it off that well.

What about the movie Spaced Invaders? In this movie a spaceship with (little green) Martians got seperated from their War Fleet and pick up a re-run of the Orson Welles broadcast that makes them think the War is actually taking place on Earth.
Very funny movie and there is actually a "Envorser Drone" (or something like that) that looks very much like the hood of a Wellsian FM including tentacles :-)

In Mars Attacks, they almost pay homage, but with Bipods instead of Tripods.

"Spaced Invaders" is silly and juvenile, but I still liked it enuff to buy the DVD.

Having given this some thought, I dont think so, and the only reason I think not is because............. John Christopher's The Tripods written post WotW, has Tripods on earth, driven by aliens, taking humans as slaves. From which the BBC made into a series........... so I dont think Mars Attacks would have breached copyright using Tripods. But Tom Jones obviously makes that film what it is :-P

I think that because Mars Attacks was a direct left wing approach to 'sci fi' in a comedic sense, the use of a tripod would have taken away the irony that made the film what it is. Tom Jones was a bizarre ingredient of the film, but that was the point!

If they ["Mars Attacks"] had tripods would they be vilolating copy right? I am not an intellectual properties lawyer, but I'd say it's very unlikely a court would rule it was copyright violation. The tripods are only one element of the novel, and they're not even described that clearly. Besides, for that film one could legitimately claim it was a parody.

Ah ok thanks guys.
Lensman - Just a passing thought I had but I believe you are 100% correct in your statement ;D
Spirit of Man - The Tripods! I never even thought of that. Very true there as well. ;D
Now looking back, both of you are very true and now I look at it, it probably wouldn't be viloating copy right. ;D

I recently saw an episode of Invader Zim on tv where GIR and Zim are watching a wotw-ish movie on tv. The aliens had like five legs...but they looked very Wellsian. And their spacecrafts were very stylized versions of the George Pal machines. The aliens died from germs too...so that tied it all together as a parody.

I have mentioned in another thread about the film Chicken Little were the 'Sky' was a piece of alien ship. The Aliens walk around in tripods. Someone runs into the cinema and shouts 'it's like War of the Worlds out there'. Well today I went to see the new Pixar film 'Cars'. A point in the film where the main character dreams of beating his enemies,he dreams of 'Sparkplug Tripods' shooting up the town. Actually they were more like Quinpods, but the similarity was there. ;D

The greatly under-rated Joe Dante film 'Explorers' has a scene where aliens are watching George Pal's 'War of the Worlds' on their giant spaceship.
Man, I loved that film as a kid. Dante does a nice turn in the new Pal release commentary as well.
