What's wrong with that? Despite the cheesyness lol
Didn't you enjoy the dogfight between F-18's and Alien Attackers?
Surely it would please you to see the cream of the US Navy being sunk

No it was dumb. Where did the US get those 400 fighters from at the end of the film?

Nothing dumb about it, if you look at the last battle you'll notice a mixture of F-18's, F-14's and Harrier Jump Jets although you only see F-18's close up. Due to that fact, all those planes could easily have been remnants of the USAF & US Navy.
You have to realise the size of America alone, especially it's military. There are places like in the Mojave desert that are 'plane scrapyards', where they keep old bombers and fighters, or ones that aren't in use. They could easily have from places like there.
I'm guessing the jets didn't all come from the same area either, some could have come from Area 51, others from California, New Mexico etc..there's a new report in the film that says "Military forces are in hiding unwilling to reveal themselves in fear of annihilation", so i'm sure there would have been plenty of planes left.

Besides this thread should be about the USS/HMS Thunderchild!
Due to the fact that we're, especially the Military is vulnerable to EMP and would be rendered useless in WOTW. What if a brand new ship the USS/HMS Thunderchild was outfitted with hardened circuits? Therefore immune to the EMP and is able to fight back and truly show our firepower, although too little too late fashion.

The story is based in victorian England, the ship is English. The Thunderchild, obviously a British Navy ship belonging to the greatest fleet in the world, the British are always first to make a stand. The Americans make a dozen films rewriting the course of history such as Enigma, they rewrite history and brainwash people into believing them. Such a large superpower embarassed thet they could never match the feats of our grandfathers that they have to alter history in movies and portray it to the masses...Perestroika! Obviously the war would never have been won without the aid of the americans but it's disgusting how they always seem to win the war single handedly. ' We will fight them in the hills....we will fight them in the streets.........

And I'm sure that -all- of the films and plays depicting English history are just dead on historically accurate... Personally I'm ammused by this whole thread, everyone tossing out the top rated most advanced flagship, or most powerfull ship in the navy, forgetting that the Thunder Child was none of the above. Thunder Child was an armored torpedo ram, not a battleship it's fame should come from it's heroism, and it's sucess against the odds, not the size of it's guns.

Reportedly the SS movie is gonna have an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) disable all hi-tech equipment, so if there is to be an analog to the Thunder Child scene, it will indeed have to be by reviving an older ship, one with no critical systems controlled by electronics. Which means it can't have had an upgrade since much after WW II, when they were already experimenting with targeting computers.

Since this is an american movie, and they will perhaps use an older ship, I would bet on the USS Missouri. The USS Missouri fought several battles during ww2 in the pacific, and was the ship which the japanese signed the unconditional surrender on board...yanks just seem to love patriotic symbolism (I'm not attacking anyone, but "The patriot", "We where soldiers" and several other american war movies makes my statement something like a fact), so using the USS Missouri again would be liked by the american audience.

using the USS Missouri again would be liked by the american audience. Yes it would be a popular choice, but if memory serves the Missour was the last battleship still in use, and was only decommissioned a few years ago. Therefore the electronics would have been upgraded several times, and it would be nearly as vulnerable to an EMP as a new ship. OTOH if they really wanted to use it, they could have a bit in there about "It's a floating museum, so for historic purposes we restored the ship to its original operating condition at the end of WW II."

Another question popped up in my head. Could a modern ship still function at all without it's electronics? If so, that would probably reduce it's fire power to manually manned deck guns, not very effective, but still... That would force the navy (and perhaps even the army too) to fight the martians with primarly good old artillery.

According to my copy of JANE'S FIGHTING SHIPS, The US Navy retired its last battleship, the USS MISSOURI in 1992. Since it appears WOTW is set in the USA, I assume if the aliens battle a warship, it will be a US Navy warship. If so, possible candidates would include nuclear-powered aircraft carriers because they are the largest warships (over 1,000 feet long) and carry jet fighter-bombers which would add more hi-tech drama to the movie----aliens vs. warships and jet planes. Keep in mind, all aircraft carriers are part of a battle group which includes at minimum, escort ships of one cruiser, one destroyer, one frigate and a nuclear submarine. So if the aliens combat a carrier, any such battle might include all of the preceding ships and jets. Another possibility is an amphibious assault ship, which is an aircraft carrier that carries helicopters, Harrier jump jets and landing craft, in addition to almost 2,000 troops. As for how the US Navy names its ships, it is: Aircraft Carriers---famous statesmen (Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington, Reagan, Eisenhower.....). Cruisers---famous US battles (Anzio, Gettysburg, Normandy, Leyte Gulf.....). Destroyers---US Navy war heroes (John S. McCain, John Paul Jones, Spruance.....) Frigates---US war heroes, etc. (Oliver Hazard Perry.....) Submarines (attack)---sealife (Seawolf), US cities (Los Angeles, Houston, Miami.....), submariner/statesman (Jimmy Carter) and states (Virginia, North Carolina.....). Submarines (ballistic missile)---states (Florida, Ohio.....). Amphibious Assault---US Navy amphibious battles (Tarawa, Saipan.....) and US Navy ships (Bonhomme Richard, Essex.....).
