I'm afraid I've got the worst one possible I think he he, After lending my original to my dad and never getting it back I had to replace it with this awful thing he he ;D No my friend you're wrong, that's nothing - have a look at the one my school library has: He he. That's awful and quite possibly the worst one in the world since to me it seems to have nothing to do with the subject of WOTW. Anyway, I have 5 books: Have close look at the last one and you'll see its some sort of flying saucer standing up on light beams! Not anything like a tripod! Also have a look here for more covers: drzeus.best.vwh.net/wotw/

My three paper copies: I also have a Microsoft Reader e-book version that doesn't have a cover, as such.

Very nice. I sometimes think it would be nice to have one with illustrations, but then again they take the power of imagination away from the reader. Opinions?

Tom Kidd's illustrations are lovely - and the site McTodd has linked to there shows a few of them. I enjoy seeing the pictures - it is fun to see how different people interpret the machines.

I always enjoy seeing an artist's interpretation, *if* it's competently done and the artist sticks to what the author has written. Unfortunately, *no* artist illustrating *any* edition of WotW which I've seen on Dr. Zeus' site has drawn the Tripods as Wells describes them. Still, the Kidd illos are lovely, and I do think he's spot-on in his depiction of the the flying machine.

This one's mine, the same version I bought when I was eight, though I've had to buy a couple of new 2nd hand one's since then. It's the design of both martian and machine that informs most of my imagination when reading the novel, though a little of the Spielberg design is creeping in now as well for extra creepy effect. I really like the German one of the mannish shaped tripod bending over with the arms, for some reason I find it frightening.

War of the Worlds: Illustrated by Edward Gorey. I'm damn proud of this one because of the pictures that are in it. They're so great. It is an English copy, even though I'm Dutch. But I rather read it in the original language. Each chapture begins with an illustration, this one goes with 'Underfoot'. Tripod
