Schools have a habit of making you read terrible books. Wow, is this one of my pet peeves! If I hadn't learned on my own that reading could be fun, I'd certainly never have learned it in school! Let's see, what can I remember of books I was forced to read in school which I'd only recommend as a way of putting people off reading forever? Silas Marner The Scarlet Letter The Pearl (Steinbeck) The Great Gatsby No doubt there were others which I've mercifully forgotten over the decades... Honestly, sometimes I think our schools are deliberately set up to squash any chance that kids might find out learning can be interesting and fun. Pink Floyd had it right: "We don't need no education / We don't need no thought control..."

Ah, The Pearl, we read that too. Loved the happy ending.
Isn't it amazing how books can grip you (e.g. War of the Worlds) or switch you off completely?
