My question would be; How does a FM pick up so many people, as described in the passage? The people would scatter like rats into nooks and crannies apart from the people who 'were too frightened or drunk to run away'.
That said, it is an extremely chilling thought/scene.
Wells at his best, simple verse with maximum impact!

I love Correa's drawings, too. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend the following website of WotW illos, which includes 16 Correa drawings... three unpublished! drzeus.best.vwh.net/wotw/illus/interior.htmlLook around a bit and you can find cover illos, too.

As many of you know, I represent the collection of 31 original 'hors texte' drawings from the 1906 Edition and many other Corrêa artifacts owned by Sebo Fino Livraria Antiquária (Brazil).
It's great to see such a lively discussion about the Corrêa illustrations! For those of you able to travel, the Science Fiction Museum & Hall of Fame in Seattle has 9 original drawings on display. If you think the ones you've seen in books and on Dr. Zeus' site are intriguing, you should see the genuine articles!
