Does anyone happen to remember if some scenes were edited from the movie. I seem to remember hearing that at least one scene (possibly featuring the martian creature) was cut from the movie, but does exist in some rare copies.

Do you know, Scottabot, that as I was munching away on this rather tasty stir fry I've just knocked up, I was glancing through the topic and thought this thread was called.... Missing Scones. Yes- I was about to burp and type "I ate them!", but that would have thrown all into confusion made cry in abject shame at my idiocy. Thus is the power of careless skim reading. Anyway- I really don't know about cut scenes - I have watched this film many times, but know little more about it. You don't mean the scene in the ruined house do you, where Clayton chops the 'eye' off the tentacle and the martian comes in, then after being thumped runs away crying? I thought that would be in all versions....

Ya know, I don't know what I meant. No, the scene you described is in all copies. I can't remember where I heard about a scene cut from the movie, or when. Perhaps it's just wishful thinking. As Bill Engvall would say... "Here's My Sign!"

As far as missing scenes, I'm not sure. However, there are a couple of spots in the original trailer where there seem to be alternate takes. One is the crash of the meteor - has a much bigger explosion. The 2nd is just an extension of the scene where the plane dropping the flare is blasted out of the sky. After the Martians shoot the heat ray around, a reporter pokes his head out of the ditch and says, "Look!" Then they show the shot of the 1st ship coming out. Wonder what he was to be looking at in the script? In the movie this scene fades to more military coming in and the "Look!" section is gone.

I heard somewhere that it was intended we see inside the crashed Manta Ray at the end, but because people wernt happy with the set that was cut, and all we got was the hand coming down the ramp.

In that case Marcus, I'm glad the scene was cut.. It would have taken away a little of the mystery about the Mantas for me, not unlike the Special Edition of CE3K where you see Roy Neary go inside the mothership. Never did like that scene. It would be interesting to see the scene you talk about from WotW though if it gets included.

They might even apear on the up and coming SE of the film I've been hearing about! Here's hopeing! I wounder if there was a bit that was cut (if there were any at all) of tripod, we can faintly see some legs in the scene about the martians all over the world, in the England bit above the building for about 1 second. But I doubt of any other footage includig them...

Well of course the most famous cut scene from the 53 version is after the first cylinder has opened. The Martians try to build a tripod and think "sod it, the towns hardwear store is closed and we dont have enough parts, we'll fly instead"

The Martians controled the machines on Mars, using VERY long strings to steer them about and fro... ;D

My fav missing scene was where the "martians" didn't "die". Let's just say the victory celebration turned into something of a bender. Yeah, stupid stupid stupid thing to do before total planetary subjugation but those were the good times! I'm feeling much better now...

There were two deleted scenes mentioned by Ann Robinson. The first was when Clayton wakes up Sylvia after they crashed in that plane, & she reminices about her uncle. The second was when they were in the farmhouse & Clayton was trying to reassure Sylvia by saying something like "Don't worry. We'll get out of here .... somehow!" & the audiences apparently laughed hysterically at that line (I don't know why) , so they chucked that one too.
