I was around 15, & watched it on our family's only TV (a little b&w set). I didn't see the wires then, though my father claimed he did. I dismissed his comments 'cuz I didn't want him to ruin the movie.

Uhh..Sherman, set the wayback machine for me. Like PerfesserForrester, I must have seen the movie on a B&W television. Around 1973 to 1975. I remember thinking for many years after, that the movie was filmed in black and white. I was maybe around six or seven years old. Had no idea of what I was even watching at the time, or how much it would stay with me. And here after more than three decades... I still remember it. Seems I'm not alone...

Ah yes - I remember well! As with many of us I first saw it when I was just a little kid - perhaps 7-8 years old! I destinctly remember it because BBC 2 was running Sci-Fi movies every Saturday night/morning and my Dad would tape them for me. I remember watching 'Invaders from Mars' the week before and being relieved and secure in the knowledge that the army always won! You can imagine my expectations therefore when I saw the military build up in WOTW and thought that we would win! It all went wrong after that!! When the machines just shrugged off the massive barrage and then wiped out the army I was terrified! Even more so when the cities across the world were levelled. The thought that the army/humans could be beaten by the invaders had never entered my mind! I dont think I quite recovered from that! Still I look back on it now and love it all the more for the scare it gave me.

I remember watching this film when I was 5, it was the movie that introduced me to science fiction. I loved the film to death, the heat ray, the electronic eye... all very impressive from such an old film!
okay so it deviated from the book, big deal, but its good on its own and has impressed me more then any other version filmed... its third place on my list of favorite adaptions, with the first being the book, and in second is the musical...
