Seriously? I may jump into your camp of "the FX might be worth the cinema ticket but the rest isnt worth the fluff from my arse crack", parallel dimension? Thats just crap and no amount of eye candy will stop it being a travesty. But I firmly believe its not true. If you consider the reason behind the decision to change the martians because "we want to keep it real and gritty and we know mars has no martians living on it" to go and use something even more ridiculous just contradicts that entirely. That's a good point, and I fervently hope you're right.

This could obviously just be a rumour but if it is true then this film will be even more of a travesty than many of us feared.

Another plot point: I think Cruise is gonna blow up the aliens heads by singing "You've lost that lovin' feeling"

Hello Hals, and welcome to these boards! :-)
I don't know if they'll be from Mars. I do believe that the parallel dimension thingy is just utter crap. Don't believe anything you read on the net-thingy. But Martians or not, I'm not gonna watch this movie as a WotW adaption, but as a great Spielberg SF movie.

Cheers Gnorn, I've been reading here for ages so thought I'd join in !
I think we all have our own ideas of how WOTW looks and feels and basically whatever adaptation any film-maker creates will never quite "hit the spot". Still, I am looking forward to the paramount "version".
One slight hang up I have though is this will be a lot of peoples first foray into the WOTW universe and a lot of the younger first-timers will watch the film, then read the book. Some may actually be disappointed (a travesty I know) that it was set way back in Victorian England. They'll maybe be expecting a carbon copy of the film.
Who knows...

Hals, yes, I think that's how most of the members start out. I know I did. Coming from the Bungie forums, I was very sceptic about joining another board.
I agree on thinking that a lot of the (younger) people, knowing only of WotW through the Spielberg (or Pal) movie, or the radioplay even, will frown their eyebrows when reading the original novel. But then again, the original is so brilliant in it's own way, I don't they will be put off by it.

Yes I agree about The Time Machine. It seems the modern telling of the Time Machine sadly has parallels with the modern version War of the Worlds by Spielberg.
When I first saw the teaser and faithful reproduction of the Time Machine itself I was very excited. Details started to leak out that it was set in New York, USA instead of London, England as in the Original and of course I wasn't very happy but I thought oh well I can live with that. Then I saw the movie and thought it was so bad that it didn't matter where it was set! As you said the fact that Wells grandson was involved didn't seem to have any affect on it's direction.
I really hope this rumour of a parallel dimension isnt true. While I love the idea of parallel dimensions in Science Fiction (having read a few books with this as a central theme), it is *NOT* meant to be a part of The War of the Worlds.
The film critic reviews are certainly going to make interesting reading after the movie comes out and how it compares to the book...

Yeah, this report isn't very solid. The parallel dimension could work as a surprise twist...what if this alternate dimension they came from was in the future, where man has evolved into "the Martians"? Or maybe they come from an alternate Mars from the past...who knows. I do hope if this idea is true they handle it skillfully. It really would be a shame to mess the story up with a radical new twist.
I sort of liked the modern Time Machine. It wasn't like the book, but I really liked the ideas in it. I just wish the Elois would have been portrayed as they are in the book...and that we got to see more stops in the time traveling like in the old movie. But having read the original novel, it doesn't translate well into a movie. As great as it is, it's mostly one character who can't even communicate with anyone...and the love between the one Eloi and the Time Traveler isn't beautiful at all...it's almost disturbing since the Elois are barely human. I would have been much more happy if they at least made more homage to the book...but I really think the movie is under-rated.
Speilburg is driving the fans nuts! We have no idea what he's going to do!

Harry Knowles will print any rumor that comes his way. AINC's has become a joke as far as reliable information goes. Anybody could have sent this in. Knowles will accept "scoops" from anybody. the idea of maybe checking them out for relibility never occurs to Harry. As for the AICN talbackers, they are beneath comtempt. The only reason to go to the Talkbackers is to have a good laugh at the stupidity and illiteracy there in. The only people dumber then the talkbackers are those who take them seriously.... AICN has turned from being a pioneer fansite to one of the biggest crapfests on the Interenet. Except for laughs, nobody with any intelligence takes AICN serioulsy any more.
