I first got a taste of the WOTW series back in 1990 during a friend's birthday party ( I was 12 ). We rented out the pilot and watched it late in the evening, our smiling faces quickly becoming quite grim within the first 10 minutes. It started off great with lots of shooting and big explosions - exactly the type of thing you want to see when you're a kid. And then the martians appeared.... Things stirring in the white slime. Brief glimpses of hideous looking creatures lurking between barrels. Big three fingered hands grabbing people and pulling them along the ground. We were watching from behind the sofa at this point. We tried to cover up our fear by making geeky comments like "the eyes looked better in the movie" or "what happened to the suction cup thingies on the ends of their fingers?" Our shaky voices clearly betrayed us. For the first time I realised what it must have been like to watch Dr Who in the 60s. Luckily, the martians didn't seem half as scary once they took over the human bodies ( except the bit where one of them burst out towards the end ). By the time the finale with the fighting machines was on screen we were back on the right side of the sofa again. Needless to say, I had trouble getting asleep that night!
I didn't get to see the full series until ITV showed it in a late night slot during the mid 90s. It was certainly dark and creepy, but it was only really WOTW in name alone. The sight of a tripod in one episode was good, but it often got a little distasteful for my liking. There was one episode where a martian ( or a Mothern as I think they were called ) went on the loose in a hospital and ended up ripping a couple of people to bits... lots of blood and gore for no really good reason. And how did the martians suddenly get so strong anyway? They didn't seem at all like the little creature that had appeared in the 53 film.

I tried to get an interview with Anne Robinson a few months back but they stopped returning my emails.
Anyway... I have 2 videos of the TV series, the pilot is cool, but the others are a bit to 80's for me. I'm a child of the 90's remember. (I was 6 when the TV series started in 1988)
Its got the WOTW sticker on it so I appreciate what it bring sto the Family of incarnations. I didn't like the Martians in the TV series, they would have been wicked as the update three pupil matien (which I think is bloody scary) but the skin tone and whole feel of the alien changed, looked too strong, not Alien enough.

Yes. The merging part was very scary even when you are an adult. The early episodes were rather gorey and morbid at times, then this toned down a little before the disasterous new season and version started.
All of a sudden key characters are dead, the Martians arent even Martians in form any more and other problems with the plot.
But despite all this it was an interesting series that like Beast Master, had little to do with the movie or book aside from the name and a few particulars.
It did though have some interestign ideas and played around quite a bit. In a way it had alot in common with the older series the Invaders. I did like the new seasons opening credits and music. And the Martian/Alien design was interesting.
It was produced by I think the same people making Forever Knight, Friday the 13th, and I think Highlander and some other thriller type series at the time.

I was about 7 or 8 when the series came out, and I remember it scaring me half to death every time. I would never miss an episode on TV. I was always on my spot on the couch, safely between my mom and dad, completely absorbed in watching, alternating between adoring Col. Ironhorse, and Harrison. That is until the day my dad scared the beegeebas out of me. He put his hand under his shirt and reached out to grab me with it. I thought he had been taken! I was terrified. From then on I sat on the other side of mom, on the floor next to the dog, with a wary eye on my father. I'll never forget that night, or this series. I just love it so much even now, when the special effects seem just a tad bit cheesey. ;D

The effects werent too bad, considering that they were few and far between after the initial few episodes. The martian suits were good and they didnt over-use them, and the transformation/merging sequences were darn creepy. Considering this was the same crew as produced Friday the 13th the series, Highlander the series, and others, they did a pretty good job of it all in all with what they had.

[glow=red,2,300]There was a Friday the 13th series? Hmmm.... maybe someone should start a petition to get Paramount to release the series on DVD with loads of extras etc... Maybe a collectors ed of the movie too! [/glow]

Yeah, I saw one or two of the Friday the 13th series.. it was something about these people who inherit an antique shop and they have to retrieve some cursed items that were sold there.Sort of an Americanised, bigger version of that classic Peter Cushing film 'From Beyond the Grave'. I used to quite like 'Freddy's Nightmares' as well. I'm a sucker for anthology films and TV shows like that.

[glow=red,2,300]I used to rent the videos as they came out, along with early star trek the next generation... At the time I enjoyed them both equally... makes you wonder where the wotw series could have gone in the right hands... [/glow]

Actually those things did still have the single 3 pupiled eye but they changed it to look like yellow irises with 3 black pupils, plus the eyes were nowhere nearas bigas the movie versions, and were more oval than round- I remember cos I was doing a comparison one day between the series and the movie (I think I was sick or bored or something....)

I bet your bodies would change a lot too if you were submerged in radioactive toxic waste for a few years!
