Do you think in a very roundabout & very loose way, the 747 crash etc...is loosely based on the cylinder landing on the house in the novel?

I'm sure it is. I believe Koepp even said so.

I think it was definately meant as a parallel to the cylinder landing on the house. That's how it felt when I first watched the movie.

Yep... definately seemed like that to me. Not a very good replacement, though.

Sadly, they tried to squeeze too many elements of the book into too few scenes in the film...

I'd say the basement scene in the film is more based on the cylinder landing on the house. In both, the main character (with his daughter too in the film) is trapped in a hide-out with a mad man while the aliens are patrolling outside.

Another similarity between the basement scene and the cylinder dropping on the house- in both parts of the story, the character/s witness a person getting their blood sucked out by a tripod! And here's another- in both parts of the story, the aliens, one way or another (tentacles in the book, machine in the film) feel their way through the 'hide-out' to find any humans hiding inside!
The only similarity the plane crash had with the scene is something crashing against a house- that's it. The basement scene has SO many similarities.
