I have been asking myself this question many times since I first saw this movie. What time of the year was this movie suppose to take place? I figured nov or dec because in the first part, like during the appearance of the strange cloud and lightning, emp. It seems cold type of weather because people are breathing out fog, namely Ray is. But that does not make sense because when Ray looks at his watch, it stopped at like 5:26pm local time i presume and its still fairly broad daylight out. In say fall or autumn the sun is down long before that and is dark or night time by then. And later on, during the walk to the ferry, there is snow falling. Maybe its just me or maybe the aliens invasion, arrival had altered our weather.

Well, I think it's set somewhere from end October till mid November because of the barren trees and the snow and all. It really gave the film a gritty look.

Its got to be a cold time of year, because when Ray runs around the back of his house to inspect the swirling cloud, there's condensation coming out of his mouth.

It was filmed between the months of November 05 and March 06 so maybe the film based around the November - January period. During the Athens ferry scene i can recall it snowing.

It was snowing and no one was remarking on it being "weird weather". Plus in the ferry scene, everyone was dressed quite warmly. Some of the refugees, taken unaware, would likely have only the clothes on their back. So if they were dressed warmly, I think that's a pretty good indication of the time of year. I'd say it's pretty clear it was winter, despite whatever Ray's watch said. But that does not make sense because when Ray looks at his watch, it stopped at like 5:26pm local time i presume and its still fairly broad daylight out. Here in the middle latitudes of the USA, coupled with Daylight Savings Time, around 5:30 is about the very earliest it gets dark on the very shortest days of the year. If they were up around Boston I guess it would get darker a bit earlier, tho.

Nah i reside in oregon usa and during when after we turn our clocks back in oct or november, i think all over the usa, it gets dark or night time say by 4 30ish pm and I have been thinking, as far as Ray's watch being dead is concerned, that maybe the emp made watches, clocks, that are not digital or electronic, would be messed by maybe the emp making the hands turn around so that hours would seemed to have passed or have gone the other way so to not show the true time that it was when the emp hit. One thing i think that shows that it was say in maybe november was that as Ray walks out of his place you see flags on homes next to his so maybe it was suppose to take place during around veterans day. The movie came out in June of 05 and i thought since there is flags and it was june 29 the movie came out i figured maybe during our 4th of July celebration.

The flags are a reference to all the flags which were displayed as a mark of patriotism following the 9/11 attack. The post-9/11 attitudes and fears are a rather glaring part of this movie-- remember when some idiot cries "Is it the terrorists?"

With the flags thing, when Ray and Rachel are in the back yard looking at the storm and the lighting starts striking, they retreat to the back of the house - Ray does mention something about 4th of July but I couldn't pick up on it.

Really, it's spoze to be the 4th of July? That's quite a blunder, considering it's quite apparent later on in the movie that it's during winter.

I think Ray was just trying to calm down Rachel by comparing the storm to 4th July fireworks... (because that makes sense ).

Oh ok, I couldn't quite pick up on what he said thanks Lupe.
Sorry Lensman I should have made my post a little clearer. I ment that I agree with the post 9/11 thing, but Ray does mention something about 4th July. My bad.
