I read some time ago that the overall budget for this movie was up $250 million. I wonder of what amount of this number was needed for the cgi, visual effects alone?

Alot of that would have been used on a pump powerful enough to inflate Toms head.

Hard to say. The effects were of course top notch but as technology's changing all the time - maybe the fx didn't cost as much as they might have done before.

I wonder what software they used. If i was a billionaire i would make my own studio and not so much make movies but efx sequences like in wotw and other movies. I got alot of good ideas that i can near see vividly , perfectly in my mind's eye.

well it probably cost a lot to tear that church in half, and tom had a huge salary, and that little girl, the whiner probably commands a decent salary now too, so between the church, tom, the little whiner, and the FX, yeah most of it went to the whiner and tom. but dammit that first scene was hella cool, why couldn't the rest of the movie had been hella cool instead of hella crap

Not sure what the cost of the CG was but the budget for the film was $132 million. That figure seems very low in comparison to other recent blockbuster movies. For example X-Men 3 has a budget of $210m, Superman Returns $260 million, King Kong $207m, Poseidon $150m, Kingdom of Heaven $130m.

I read that the $250 mil figure is false, and that's it more like a chunky $120 mil, that I can relate to. As for the film, everything up to the parting of Robbie and Cruise is ace in my book.
After that it flags somewhat, with the odd cool bit and scary probe.

They would have used either Maya or 3D Studio Max. But the models are amazing, I know how hard it is to create a basic model in one of these packages.
The problem with so many films and computer games is they rely upon the texuring to make a model like introcate, but some movies such as WOTW actually sculpted the groves and dents in their models, so when it came to texturing the model was already good enough that the textures enhanced this.
The majority of budget in animation goes on the cost of the licence for the packages which are about £3000 per computer, the you have the model-makers, animators, texturers, paint-weighters, lighting people, renderers and many more just for the animation side. Not to mention the cost of designers, directors, editors etc.
I created a budget for a "low budget" project I worked upon and the cost worked out at £2.5million and we did things the cheap way, so I can imagine why films cost so much.

I was watching the 2nd disc of the Paramount double DVD set.
For the previs stuff they used MAYA.
