It's pretty strange how this Forum's positive reactions to the film are so easily overshadowed by negative ones. Like for every positive post two negative posts are thrown at it. Anyway for me this movie is as much WotW as H.G.Wells' book, Orson Welles' broadcast, Pal/Haskin's film and Jeff Wayne's Musical. A great story that knows no age and can be used for many years to come. Tripod I don't think it's strange. I think most people have realised what a let down Spielbergs film was. Sort of watchable as a summer blockbuster but a minging great let down as a WOTW adaptation. The way the camera mainly focuses on Cruise who's nearly always the centre of attention just says it all to me. Should have been called - EGO OF THE WORLDS. A film starring Tom Cruise About Tom Cruise [ oh, and some aliens in the background ].

Tripod i don't think its strange at all. for the majority of WOTW fans, this movie was a great letdown. the greatest insult, in my opinion (and probably a lot of other people's opinions too) was removing Martians from the movie. setting it in modern times is a close second. a lot of people have said that it is an ok sci fi movie but a horrible adaptation of WOTW. i tend to agree here somewhat, and if i'd never heard of WOTW before, i might have liked the movie more. the fact remains that it does have the title WOTW and does not pull off the great responsibility of living up to that title.

I like the movie to a point, theres some awsome scenes and some ok but all in all as the time is passing im getting more frustrated that spielburg felt it was ok to RUSH it into theaters when more time should have been spent on the script way before shooting started.Just over a year ago we were all buzzing on here,we had 3 movies coming and one of them was going to hit the mark but as i sit here now i feel were back to how i felt a few years ago ,will we ever get the movie we deserve,It dont look like it at this stage.I havent give up hope on jeffs version of course, but even that seems to be getting put back all the time.I really do really feel let down by spielburg as he easily had the power to do it correctly. For christ sake he even had to change to location on the time machine that made no diference whatsoever to the plot.Cop out.

Personally I very much liked it. The first half scared the bejesus out of me in the cinema, with a real sense of dread. I don't have any problem with the film following Cruise as he is, in essence, the narrator. If the camera were revolving around, say, William H Macy (and I have to admit that in my book that would make the film rock more by about a factor of... oooh... five) then we wouldn't say it was a Macy ego trip. Cop: "Hey! Get out of here, the tripods are coming!" Macy: "What the heck d'y'mean?!" Cop: "Tripods... you not seen, 'em? Oooh. Big fellas with ray guns." Macy: "Ray guns?" Cop: "Ya'ah. Better get out of here. They're angry, Macy." Macy: I'm co-operating here!" EXTRA LOUD FOGHORN NOISE Cop: "Look. There's one there. Don't look too happy Macy. I'd better run if I were you." Macy: "Ya darn tootin'." ... (later) ... Ogilvy: "Gonna turn cold, dontcha' think?" Macy: "Ya'ah." Sorry, got a bit carried away with the possibilities there. I still maintain it was a very good film, well directed. The script should have been stronger though. The dialogue was pretty good with a snappy realism, but more care should have been taken as to consistency and the entire Robbie plot line was badly realised. For all that though, the ferry scene, the riot scene and the intersection scene (with lots more moments dotted throughout the film) in my opinion remain landmark moments in sci-fi horror - and for that reason I find it a worthwhile film. And Cruise, while a scientology nut, did a reasonably good job in the film - and did look genuinely scared. So you're wrong, in my opinion, Fallingstar. (No Macy though.)

All i know is this, i keep watching the dvd over and over and its messing up my mind. its like a love hate thing about it. When the dvd came out last nov 22, brother bought it, i kept watching it night after night after ucking night. What is wrong with me? Am i obsessed bout it? Yah i am but i am sick of the movie as much as i like watching it. lol its like a drug. And it hits deep deep emotional feelings in me and its hard to explain. I just wish ss made a better product. I will say this though, the movie got me into the real thing, the novel.

I loved the film when I saw it the first time, mainly as Rusti puts it, there was a level of euphoria. There are still many parts of the film I enjoy, however there are elements of the film that ruin it for me. If you were to break the film down into its scenes, I'd enjoy them all individually, more so than I enjoy them in their current state.
The real film I was after featured massive scale destruction, skin of the teeth survival and scenes of a nature disturbing enough to make it an 18 certificate. What I saw was a Spielbergian family adventure also featuring some tripods, but not alot and not very often. If I saw the film right now, Id enjoy it, but Im left wanting more, more of the actual invasion, better aliens, more tripod action. There are very cool official film posters featuring destruction scenes that arent in the film, also a concept art for the tripod grabbing people out of the building, rumoured to be a deleted scene to be re-included on the DVD, but sadly no.
It has elements of a very good film, just not on quite the grand scale I was hoping for.

I don't quite understand how you can slate the spielberg movie for not being anything like the novel, but admire Pal's version so much? I mean yes, Pal's movie is much better - but still, as an adaptation of the book, its rubbish. It was set in modern day, they even mounted up a nuclear strike against the invaders. The only thing that followed the book, was their initial arrival - that perfectly mimicked the horsell common sequence in the book, and their destruction via the bacteria at the end. Spielberg gave us Tripods, Red Weed. He gave us the Curate/Artilleryman/Ogilvy in the form of Tim Robbins, and was faithful to the ending. Yes, it was rushed, yes it was full of plot holes, yes it was too short. But at least it included more references to the book than any other WOTW film ive seen so far. It was a perfect summer movie, and as opposed to looking at it as another adaptation of the book, I saw it as a remake of the Pal movie. Just done much better. I do agree that spielbergs movie was a let down, but there's no use crying over spilt milk. Whats done, is done. As the old saying goes, if you want something done properly, you gotta do it yourself So come on, I invite you to make your own adaptation and share it with us all. We'll all follow the progress, from your pre-production, to shooting, to post-production, get really excited about it and then rip the nuts out of it at the end because it wasn't 100% like the book I think it's time to move on. We have Jeff Waynes movie soon - and we all know that was alot more faithful to the book - so we will eventually get the movie we are looking for, but you've got to sit through all the crap ones until that one comes along. Patience, people...

Your not far off. The posters are laminated on the reverse with some horrible plastic so as soon as the flames hit them - wooooosh black smoke.
H_C, enviromentally friendly.
