not sure if i understand the point you're making, i'm assuming you are consider it a possibility that they said they won't be martians, just to throw us off, when in actuality they WILL be martians?
ok... well then how do we know there will be tripods then? maybe he's saving the fact that he's using flying green boomerangs for the Pal purists. boy that'll have them excited

yes it is a huge departure, allow me to explain. when the book was written, any speculation about life in the universe was naturally going to be centered around what we knew and understood, which was the planets in our own solar system. the fact that other stars were just like the sun was only just then being discovered. mars was the logical choice. wells' original point was to compare the martians to humans, in the way that we have a habit of killing other people with no regard to their rights, for the sake of our own benefit. the martians, viewed in this way, are extensions of ourselves, what we might become. born in our own solar system. evolved from creatures like us. not from some far away planet that has nothing to do whatsoever with humanity. thats why its important to keep the martians as MARTIANS, not some anonymous aliens. That's right. Martians, though not descendents of humans, suggested certain similarities with homo sapiens in order to make a couple of points. They reinforce the evolutionary component that acted as a cautionary tale for us the same way the Eloi and Morlock split in The Time Machine warned us against complacency with our comfortable and familiar world. The other obvious point is that natural selection would not take the same path on different worlds, even if they are as close as Mars and Earth. Also there's the pesky little matter of the original text making the invaders Martians for another (even more) specific reason; "that for centuries Mars has been the star of war..." But since when has Hollywood ever let an original text's classic lines get in the way of their "finest" contemporary minds? I genuinely hope David Koepp is as clever a writer as some believe him to be. After jettisoning so much of the original text's specifics, he has an awesome task of having his screenplay live up to the Wellsian ideas it must[/b] in order for it to not be ID4x2. We'll know this summer. Until then its all conjecture, skepticism or sycophancy.

Why does ID4 keep getting dragged into it? Can we not draw the distinction? If SS gets too far from the book does that mean it becomes a bunch of cheesey nonsense like ID4? NO it does not.
You can have all that evloution warning symbolism with any alien you choose that stayes with in the Wellsian discription of the martians having evolved into giant brains with no emotion, they dont have to come from mars, all you need is a handy scientist to point out how they evolved and how they feed. Wells chose mars because it was plausable in his time -(mars had canals then)- and made the cylinder idea work better.

Why aren't they using Mars when they're using the red weed? C'mon we all know about that little Mars Rover's problems always getting his little wheels caught up in that pesky red weed that Well's was dead right about covering the red planet.
I'm being sarcastic.

I just had a thought..... This is from the interview. Spielberg's protagonist, played by Tom Cruise, also differs from the Pal hero, a scientist, and Wells' narrator, a cultured man of learning much like Wells himself. Instead, Cruise will play a blue collar family man and dockworker who uses giant cranes to shift cargo off ships and onto trucks. I hope there isnt a scene like the "Rippley V's the alien queen in a power loader" where we see Cruise topple a tripod with one of his "giant" cranes........

Hey im serious why use 'giant cranes' as his ocupation, why not just lowly dock worker? I think we should prepare for some crane swinging tripod busting action from Cruise, a tripod does have to come down after all! And I bet "thunderchild" will be written on the side of the crane too

Perhaps we will have war droids similar to Mark 13 in Hardware? These droids take whatever is to hand and graft them into their structure to make a better killing machine.
So, you could have the cylinder crash by the docks. Cruise on the crane gets a birds eye view of the pit, and the initial emrgence of the aliens. The alien base unit then somes out, is activated, and pulls the nearby cranes into the pit. The huge cranes could be dismantled to form the legs of the tripods?
Perhaps this will link later into the film, as Cruise will know the weaknesses of the Cranes, and therefore come up with a plan to disable them.

In essence,SS has in no uncertain terms said out loud to his millions of fans out there"F**** You!I'm going to do this movie how I want to do it,and to hell with you if you don't like it.''Folks he does NOT care about the desires of faithful film fans. He's just another knock-off artist with a Panaflex and a budget, after all.

ClaytonForrester. Hes giving the masses what they want, its called democracy. The fanboys are not the majority out there, not by a long shot. And the cool thing is, he CAN do exactly what he wants! Hes in charge, hes the head honcho, and all the pissing and whining in the worlds aint going to change that. From an early age I was taught to think for mayself and not be just a sheep in the flock, I applaud SS for doing what he wants and hes being honest about it, on top of that this film is going to be ace, absolutely fantastic.

except hes making it a family afair ;-; To a degree yeah but the themes in the movie are not for children like death and blood drinking so it being a PG13 does mean its not a kiddies movie but yeah it is a family movie, but then the book is a family book, in my family only my partner hasnt read it but thats because it would interupt Trisha or Eastenders or that gossipy phone call thats soooo important.
