Nicely said Lensman!
I think it's important to highlight the emotional impact of what we see on screen. The fact that the film in many parts is suppose to be a visceral and uncompromising whirlwind with the dismembering of Mankind and it's resistance.

The message of this movie is - how to take a great book and turn it into a run of the mill summer blockbuster that gets more mediocre the more I think about it. Nice tripods though!

God Fallingstar....
You dont like it, we GET IT!
There was alot of political overtones in here, but it didnt reduce my enjoyment of the movie at all. The main point of the book, the compleceny of mankind, is still reflected. I also think this movie was rushed a little, and I am almost certain a black smoke scene AND the heatrays orgininal effects were hacked out of the end of the movie, but it was not, BY FAR, as awful as all the haters make it sound. There where some moments (that damn basket scene wont get out of my head, it was so...unnecessary) that this film faltered, and I think, once again, it was because it was rushed. If SS made this movie into another ID4, then I would be right up there with the whole desecration of Wells name. But the fact is, the two movies WITH his name IN THE TITLE, deficate on the face of this book moreso than this one. I think THAT is an even bigger sin. No one bitches about the GRATUITOUS NUDITY in Asylums movie, no, but THIS is a slap in Wells' face? HOW? at least SOME of the political overtones still exsist.
And BTW, this film did NOT flop, it was at the top of the boxoffice for about two weeks, sad thing is, it didnt bring in alot of money, NO movies over here are anymore, no one wants to get their butt offa the couch and go out into society anymore. I for one, went to see this movie TWICE, the only movie EVER that I have done such a thing, not even the LotR movies made me interested enough to pay to see them TWICE.

Well I have said that the film DID have some good moments Armoured but now the hype and the sock puppets have disappeared we're left with nothing more than an average movie at best.
Spielberg might have tried to distance this from ID4 but what he gave us instead was a movie that was predictably focused mainly on one of the dullest most mediocre 'stars' in the entire universe. This was made as a vehicle for Cruise - just like all other Cruise films.
You've got to admit Armoured - it wasn't anywhere near the film it could have been.
Spielberg had the tools at his disposal to make this another masterpiece like LOTR but masterpiece it certainly isn't.

Firstly i'd like to say i personally quite enjoyed the film, the three moments of brilliance i can remember is the staggering and jaw dropping emergence of the Tripod. The silhouette of the lone Tripod, follwed by the attack on the town. Finally the authenticity of the Military tactics that brought down the Tripod. If we had been treated to a scene with co-ordinated Military engagement including the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps & Navy going toe-to-toe with the Tripods, then it would've been a spectacle! Even though essentially the story is of one person's nightmarish journey, we still do get a glimpse within the story of the 'world at war' too. To show a true battle between warring worlds would've been amazing, not for Battle Porn (TM) but just for sheer scope. However in hindsight perhaps it would've been better if Spielberg had done an alien invasion story without using the War of the Worlds story as a backdrop, and just done something on his own. The problem is by modernising the story you do lose certain elements such as the Black Smoke, vulnerable Tripods etc which make it scary. I have advocated modernising War of the Worlds and i still stand by it, it's just Spielberg's treatment wasn't the best it could've been. The problem is the usage of 'shields' in films nowadays, it's just a little overused. Anyway i thought i'd chip in! Remember, the Tripods never touched our Fighter Aircraft, at least we got one on them Horsell's going to cringe, choke or do both now hehe

I DO NOT have to admit it was nowhere near the movie it coulda been, I thought it was fine the way it was. Even though we dont get to see everything that was left on the cutting room floor, I thought it was a very good movie, well done, good CG, and it had a great atmosphere to it.
I will say it, regardless if you all beat me, but, no matter how WotW is treated in film form, it could NEVER be a spectacle amongst the level of LotR, LotR as a story, is an epic, WotW is not.

Well you don't have to admit anything mate, except that Swedish women are awesome But on a serious note liking films just like anything that is judged personally and individually is down to personal taste. I personally feel he could've done better, and i can't help feeling the film was a little rushed. Especially considering the short time frame it was shot, edited and released. I'd like to think that at least War of the Worlds can offer one thing to people which they like.
