back to tripods and the aliens technology,
if we were to build a giant walking machine, no doubt, it would probably have 2 legs. so, the aliens had 3 legs, wanted a big giant walking machine, no doubt for them it was the obvious choice.

No the worst thing is he went for the same old alien design. How about a mass of tenticles? Who thought these aliens would be scary with their big eyes looking at holiday photos? They were about as scary as an andrex commercial. I find the Andrex commerical scary! Ever since i was a kid, i've been scared of that dog. Just like the one i saw in "Honey I Shrunk The Audience" 3D show in Epocot Centre, Disney World. Whenever it sniffed the audience you'd get this blast of air coming down. Creepy lol The more I think of this movie, the only thing I liked was the tripod coming out of the ground. The rest sucked. I think the aliens would have been better if they were like the ones in my cartoon. I mean, the rest of the film was full of laughs, why stop at the aliens? R Could say the same for Pal version, that's an outright comedy itself. back to tripods and the aliens technology, if we were to build a giant walking machine, no doubt, it would probably have 2 legs. so, the aliens had 3 legs, wanted a big giant walking machine, no doubt for them it was the obvious choice. It also contrasts our traditionally wheeled vehicular designs.

"Lets be bad guys" is a quote from Serenity, Jayne Cobb says it in jest. Hes also one of the 'good' guys.
So it all depends on how you look at it.
Like opinions really.

Well, I've seen the film and I must agree with my fellow Dutchie Gnorn: those "aliens" look like cute little monkeys!!
Although I liked the dying scene more than the basement scene. But that does not cover the fact that the design of the aiens is plain stupid! I really think that aliens that do not look like humans are far more scarier...

SS has had his day. Hes trying too hard in his films to beat himself and his previos achievements. He's overlooked the most unused part of the book(black smoke, octopoid alien), managed to support a dafter reason to how the aliens got here, omitted some of the best dialogue from the book. Its incredable. I know SS wanted it to be from the viewpoint of Mr Cruise and his 'lovely' family but the book, the radio show, album and film managed to mention that the war was the massacre of humanity. The end of civilisation!
The aliens were so unoriginal I couldn't believe he had done it. What was you thinking SS. Please tell us!
Just remember that when we were debating the slogan 'they are already here' many thought it was a sh11t concept. The producers reassured us it was just a twisted marketing ploy.
SS thinks SS knew better. And with 140 mill he can afford to.

They should have given the creature design job over to somebody like Stan Winston.Or maybe they should have tapped Ray Harryhausen for a bit of advice too.Between the two the producers could have come up with a more appropriate design for the ''aliens''.I agree that they looked too much like the ones from ID4,and they just didn't strike me as potentially vampiric. The cast of them didn't reek of species decadence, which they should have.Merely looking at them should have made your skin crawl.
They did miss the mark on this aspect of the film.

Hmmmm. Some liked them others did not. However, if Earth is ever invaded by space aliens let's make sure to tell 'em "Gee Mr. Alien, I don't like the way you look so bug off!"

My idea on the aliens was the same as a few others in this thread. They didnt look menacing because, cmon, isnt it a little...jingostic to assume that every creature bent on our destruction would have to look ugly. Plenty of evil things arent hideously deformed at all, look at a good majority of human beings...besides, if you sliced off the bodies and slapped tenticles down there, youve got a wellsian martian, black disk-like eyes, lipless mouths...someone laughed that the martian salavated at the end of the movie, in the book it quotes them as salavating. I thought they looked like a wells martian slapped on a monkey's body.

Your right about that not every creature bent on destruction has to be ugly. But Wells did his best to make his aliens as ugly, alien and bizarre as possible (within biology's possibilitys). And this movie IS called War of the Worlds and it IS based on Wells' novel so my opinion is they should have stuck with the Wellsian Martians.
