The only real problem I and I'm sure many other Wells fans have with the Asylum and Spielberg films [and I admit it's a BIG problem] is that they've hijacked the title WOTW.
If they called them something else and had based on HG Wells novel in the opening titles then I'm sure Wells fans would welcome these other adaptations.
Jeff Wayne has every right to call his adaptation of the book WOTW as at least he's sticking largely to the book and isn't sticking six legged fighting machines or creatures who aren't from Mars in it. Same with Pendragon if they can pull it off.
Sticking HG Wells name on some silly B movie like this might encourage a tiny minority of people to check out the book, but most people won't bother and HG's name will most probably now be associated with just another alien invasion story in most peoples eyes - instead of the original and best alien invasion story of them all.

IMDB lists the film as "Invasion". I would not be surprised if that is the final release name, not out of respect for Wells but out of fear of the Paramount legal department. I would not be surprised if Asylum knew that all along and used the WoTW name just for the sake of cashing in on the publicity generated by the Speilberg version. I guess that is cheesy, but at least it shows they know how to market ,promote, and actully get a DVD release for a film. And to the purist: Chill out a little. Wells himself apparently approved a updating when Cecil B De Mille was considering a silent version in the 192o's. I think when De Mille moved to Paramount in 1933 is how Paramount got the rights.

I don't know about anyone else on here but I find this latest news a real slap in the face. I can't believe that they've got the nerve to call this film HG WELLS WAR OF THE WORLDS in America and even if Pendragons film is good now this will end up diluting any impact that it would have made. Not only have we got Spielbergs upcoming popcorn flick travesty - complete with an ego obsessed star, but we have a diabolicaly stupid looking film with six legged fighting machines to contend with as well. Talk about confusing audiences and dumbing down Wells masterpiece. Peter Jackson is quite rightly trying to get THE HOBBIT made before any other cheap and nasty studio can get their hands on it. If only Wells was treated with the same respect! I can understand that you care a lot for the original story and may be afraid that similar films that don't do well may tarnish the original, but think of it as an opportunity. Long have i waited (well since ID4) where the subject of Alien Invasion is brought back to the fore, where major films are done on the idea. The more films that are done on the subject the more interest it will gain in the subject, and the more likely you're going to see the story you so crave. It's much better than seeing a film where the world gets destroyed by a piece of rock or ball of ice. Be patient my friend, i'm sure you will get the film you deserve

Someone who agrees with me! Like I said earlier, we're halfway there. All these movies set in the present day are lauchpads for the blockbuster extravaganza that is still true to the book that we're all waiting for. The Pendragon version might make it big in the UK, but Pendragon is unheard-of in the USA (a.k.a. where I stand). Be patient, hang on, and whatever you do don't ask me if we're there yet.
